2021 Draft Discussion
Re: 2021 Draft Discussion
Very much so Brian. In my own personal experience the best way to deal with an insulting offer is to simply ignore it or send an equally insulting counter back.
Re: 2021 Draft Discussion
problem is sometimes GMs make offers they feel fair and the other party see them as offensive. It's not like every time you hate an offer you get it means the other GM is actually trying to rip you off.Brian wroteCOLONI don't. If you ever get a ridiculous low-ball trade offer from me, post it on the boards for everyone to see. Any trade offer I make will be a good faith offer of what I believe is equal value. I also keep track of offers I recieve, and stop dealing with people who are obviously just trying to rip me off.KapG wroteCOLONdave1959 wroteCOLONKapG wroteCOLON Everyone gets low balls and sends them out too. Just nature of the beast.
A glorious example would be when years back I was trying to trim my roster leading up to its submission for the start of the season and I dared to ask for a 3rd rounder for M. Weegar.
The answer that I got from more than one GM was basically this:
"no one is going to give you 3rd for your crap (which you drafted in the 7th round btw, and now that you need to move him you ask for a 3rd, go figure)"
and that's when I was offering a Canadian. Imagine when I happened to offer in good faith a European who was still undrafted...
Re: 2021 Draft Discussion
Very good points Mik.

I operate this way too, I like making my offers public since I have nothing to hide and I try and make offers that can lead to deals.Brian wroteCOLONI don't. Re: 2021 Draft Discussion
Ha! Totally fair point. But, if you come to me with a player and ask if I’m interested, the first thing I’ll do is try to figure out what type of asset you want back. If you want a pick, I’ll actually run projections on the player and try to determine what I’d think he’s worth.kyuss wroteCOLONproblem is sometimes GMs make offers they feel fair and the other party see them as offensive. For the record, here were my thoughts on Weegar in 2013: “Although he lacks top-end skills, his positional ability, high hockey intelligence and his knack for simply making the right play makes Weegar an intriguing draft pick.”

What would be the bet?
We could do something like $5 USD for each season. $5 to you if Brink puts up more NHL points than Beniers, $5 to me if the opposite is true. Bet runs until both players retire or one suffers a career-ending injury.
With a minimum gp stipulation per season say something reasonable around like 60 in a full season I'd happily take this bet.
That sounds like your confidence is slipping a bit. Games played are a big part of why a player is better than the other to begin with. If Beniers only plays 15 games and Brink plays 75, wouldn't you want to win that year? Or if Brink plays 20 and Beniers doesn't play at all? With a 60 games min, if Brink never made it to the NHL at all, this bet would never pay out. Come on, man.
Not at all. I just don't think injuries, when a player breaks in, or other factors that have nothing to do with the player's ability should factor into who is the better player. And it goes both ways. I wouldn't want to win in a season where Brink stays up all season and Beniers is bounced back and forth because there isn't room for him on the roster. I don't think that is the point of this bet or proves anything.

Re: 2021 Draft Discussion
It's not like this is a high stakes wager anyways. If Beniers played 20 seasons and Brink never plays I'm in the hole for $100? I could care less about that haha.Da_Hawks wroteCOLON
So if Brinks plays 0 games, you don't have to pay up?
Re: 2021 Draft Discussion
Casper doesn't make bets with conditions.
Re: 2021 Draft Discussion
Casper the only one with balls to back a 2nd round guy irl vs a potential #1 oa pick. Clearly everyone thinks I'm insane so
Re: 2021 Draft Discussion
Okay, big spender. Talk is cheap.

Re: 2021 Draft Discussion
I dont know that I would say it takes balls to make a statement and not take up the offer of a bet. What would a measure that would prove someone is better than Brinks be?
Re: 2021 Draft Discussion
Bet could be who scores more points in their 1st 150 games for all I care. Injuries and other factors that are completely out of either player's control don't prove anything.Sensfanjosh wroteCOLONI dont know that I would say it takes balls to make a statement and not take up the offer of a bet. Re: 2021 Draft Discussion
But what happens when Brinks gets hurt and plays 120 games? The bet that was proposed covers both players short and long term production.
Re: 2021 Draft Discussion
If Beniers reaches 150 games and Brink doesn't reach 150 by a certain timeline, he wins. I'm simply trying to eliminate factors that can't be controlled for and actually wagering on who is the better/more productive player. Putting in a gp stipulation doesn't give either of us an advantage, but we're also talking about 2 prospects on likely different timelines.Sensfanjosh wroteCOLONBut what happens when Brinks gets hurt and plays 120 games? Re: 2021 Draft Discussion
The better question is what happens when Brink doesn’t play 150 games because he has zero acceleration and is only productive in spots where NHL defensemen are going to completely negate him.
Tell you what, Casper. Let’s do this instead. Each year, I’ll bring up this comparison at the end of the season, and if Brink has outscored Beniers, I’ll PayPal you $10. I’ll give you bonuses of $20 for every 100 NHL games that Brink plays. But if at the end of the 2030-2031 season, Beniers has scored more NHL points that Brink, since money is apparently no object for you, you just make a declaration that you were wrong.

I literally just told you if he fails to play 150 games games in the NHL by whatever arbitrary timeline you want to use and Beniers has reached 150 gp, you would win the bet. Also, the bolded lets me know that you haven't actually scouted him and just regurgitating things you've read about Brink.Brian wroteCOLONThe better question is what happens when Brink doesn’t play 150 games because he has zero acceleration and is only productive in spots where NHL defensemen are going to completely negate him.
