Hurricanes are retaining 50% of Staal's salary.

The salary retention angle makes trading a lot more interesting. It beats the NBA crap of having to match salary in trades. Building teams can add assets in deals if they eat some salary.

+ 1 especially if it is used in this manor. They are only on the hook for the rest of this year which makes sense all the way around

absolutely agree, hate the NBA trade structure and ridiculous cap system.. teams just fucking load up with bye outs too

Guys go on waivers to see if someone will claim them and if not, they can be sent down if necessary. More guys tend to go on waivers around the deadline.
