Ovy
Sid
Malkin
Lundquvist
Stamkos ????? -> this kid is damn near being in the convo with sid/ovy/malkin
Weber
Keith
Playoff Rules Pronger ** you let the battle increase and he runs train

-> then the group Toews is in, headed up by Parise then the impossible to seperate Getz, Thornton, E.Staal, Richards, Dats, Backstrom, etc.

lol @ citing an urban dictionary reference.

running train over people is a kill streak in call of duty... perhaps it came from that reference.. being the last guy in the train or something... but really it just means kicking ass..

Backstrom helps out Ovechkin's points just as much as Ovechkin helps with Backstrom's.

Backstrom is also elite defensively.

wow, i sure am able to separate Getzlaf, Datsyuk and Backs from Toews.
And if not for the age factor, i would surely pick Thornton and Staal ahead of him as well.

this reminds me of when during Jordan Staal's first NHL season i was considered blasphemous on HF for saying i would have still (had the same argument before the draft) picked Backstrom ahead of Staal.

I would pick Backs ahead of Toews in a heartbeat, even with the intangibles Toews brings. Those don't make Jonathan a franchise player sorry.. he has the head and the guts to be one, but not the game. Franchise players carry their line, Toews hardly does. It's more Kane carrying their line play.
Actually it's Toews being the perfect supplementary piece as far as the play goes.

franchise players arent just about putting up points. backstrom definitely would be a centerpiece on any team other than PIT or WSH. but it would be more in the mould of someone like gaborik (if he stayed healthy in minnesota). i think toews still has more in him with regards to points anyway. remember this thread in 10-20 years when toews is regarded as one of the best franchise players ever.

Wow, Backstrom is better then Toews.. offensively, probably but a better player all around, no fucking way.. Toews is easily a top ten all around forward in the NHL and he's only going to get better.. it's too early to make my list but trust me, he's in my top 10.

That's going way too far, I guarantee not one NHL executive would agree with you on that one...There is a reason why Toews lead the Hawks in scoring in the playoffs, is the captain, and won Conn Smythe...He is 100% their franchise player, there mere fact that you don't believe he carries his linemates is a fucking joke. You do realize it was Kane, not Toews that was moved around in the finals because he couldn't handle Chris Pronger...

Jonathan Toews does it all; score, lead, defend and win draws. The only reason he is not in my top 10 is because of his age and relative inexperience compared to others, but there is no doubt in my mind that he will be on that list shortly. This is the same kid who was the best player on Team Canada in the WJC, and again in the olympics, and yet again for the SC winning Hawks. I seriously question how much you have seen him play, because he is a consensus franchise player, there isn't any debate about it at all...

I agree 100% that Toews is franchise stuff; however so is Backstrom & both are 22 years old... there is more to come before calling it a closed case. Neither has many holes in their game, great on the dot, great passers, great shooters, great in the zone cycle, great on the rush, excellent back-checkers, and both seem to be quiet leaders IMO.

Toews is Canadian, gets a little extra hype, Backstrom is behind Ovy, gets a little ignored, anyone who thinks Toews would be the franchise on the Caps is out of their mind.

The entire start of that draft is beginning to come into their own, I'm not saying 2003, but it's looking damn good ;), proof that people want to judge drafts well before its time.

But honestly, separating Toews from Backstrom is similar to separating Getzlaf from E.Staal from M.Richards or Carter from Parise. Year by year the argument changes; a ten year review will be the first time an intelligent-meaningful comment can be made.

lol, i love how everytime i disagree on a player i've not seen much of him play.

trying to estimate, like 150 games? not enough?

the facts he is clutch and a very complete forward don't automatically make him a franchise player nor make him who carry the play for his team. Get it: we can disagree, but it's not like him being complete and clutch proves you are right.

Speaking of Gaborik, the only reasons why GMs wouldn't pick him ahead of Toews are health and attitude.

It is a factor, because anyone who knows hockey and has seen Toews play can plainly see that he is a franchise player, saying otherwise is the equivalent of me claiming OV is not a sniper...How anyone can call the best player on the SC winning team non franchise caliber is beyond me, only explanation I can think of is that you don't watch him alot. Like I said above, it's not debatable, certain arguments are, this isn't...

And LMAO at the Gaborik comment...There isn't one NHL GM who takes a 40 goal winger over a ppg (with potential for much more) centerman who can pass, score, dominate the circle, engage physically, lead, and defend his positition. Not even one...
