this is actually very gay. all they had to do was move a few teams to different divisions and we could keep the format from before..

Disagree. This format is 10x better than the current one.

Divisional playoffs are amazing.

The top four teams in each Conference would qualify for the playoffs. The first-place team would play the fourth-place team; the second-place team would play the third-place team.
i guess in the NHL it's justified by rivalries (tv-ratings), but sounds bad as far as BBKL goes.

No. It works better for the BBKL than for the NHL, and it's perfect for the NHL.

That makes it even better than perfect for the BBKL.

Buffalo registering 130 pts despite a tougher schedule denied playoff access by Philadelphia registering 108 with an easier schedule, perfect example of how 'perfect' that would be for BBKL...

That does sound perfect..

We've mirrored the NHL on just about everything outside of Free Agency. This is a HUGE change that not-doing would be against everything we've been for in this league.

It's one team. That happens all the time where a team misses the playoffs in the West, but would have made it in the East.

Not only that, currently it's an anomoly because Shiv's team is shit. In a normal year (and the year is not finished) Shiv is EASILY in the playoffs and this is a pointless argument. Lee is only going to continue to try and compete, so Philadelphia will not be a problem..

Let's see how lopsided it really is in the end of the season...

Again, having one team make it in one conference, and not another, is normal. Always happens. Will continue to happen. Only way to avoid it is Top 16, but even then, blah blah tough schedule, wooptido. There is and never will be a fair way to determine how the best 16 teams make the playoffs. So using the NHL format is the best way to do it, and we will always continue to do it.

lol, not having Free Agency is a much bigger difference from the NHL than having a different playoff seeding system would be (no one is saying not to implement the NHL realignment).

One (the lack of FA) makes the two worlds completely different, the other (adjusting PO seedings) would only make things fairer.

under this new format that would become much more relevant/frequent.
Try to think of applying the same logic to an 8 divisions system: if you had only 2 playoff spots for each division that situation would occur way more often than it happens with two conferences made of 16 teams..
it's one thing having a fixed number of 8 teams making the playoffs out of 16, is a different one having a fixed number of 4 out of 7 or 8.
i.e.: the risk of having 3 bad teams in a conference made of 7 teams is higher than the risk of having 8 bad teams in a conference made of 16 teams.

Let's vote?

2/3's wins, like the real NHL.

Sounds good to me..

So what are you actually suggesting, Kyuss?... that we actually DON'T comply with the new conference rule, and continue playing with 2 (EAST vs WEST) conference like it's fucking 2011-2012 in the upcoming 2012-2013 season?? it makes NO sense LOL. We might as well then play without ANY conferences, and just play roto LOL

no, never said that.. my qualms only relate with the playoff system.

It seems to me this new NHL playoff system would maximize the unfairness resulting from temporary unbalances, as teams in the best conference would be penalized twice: harder schedule AND higher pts needed to make the playoffs.

I think this huge change should at least be further examined before going with the 100% NHL route no matter what: It's not necessarily always the best solution; the league for example never considered Free Agency the best solution for BBKL. Which makes for a much bigger difference with the NHL than a different playoff seeding system would bring.

An option i like under the new NHL realignment:

- each conference winners advance to playoffs as one of the top 4 seeds (specific # 1-4 is determined by overall ranking)

- 2nd and 3rd team of each conference also automatically advance to playoffs ( => 12 playoff spots determined by conference standings)

- the last 4 playoffs spots are determined by the league overall ranking.
besidesnot furtherly penalizing the teams in the best conferences, this also reduces the occurrence of having the 5th team in one conference already out of competion for a PO spot way before the end of the RS.. ranking teams league wide would increase the number of teams in contention till the end for a playoff spot (reducing tanking a bit as a result).
Besides, this would give a GM reasons to be interested with how other GMs/teams in the league do, instead of only caring about the other 6/7 intra-conference teams' results.

- league wide playoffs match-ups: more rewarding of RS performances and increase battle for a better playoff seeding down the stretch (otherwise #1 vs #4, #2 vs #3 for each conference would be often decided before the last RS games).
Also: would increase the probability of having the top two teams in the league facing each other in the Stanley Cup final, and any match-up would be possible in it.

This would reduce unfairness resulting from unbalance, increase interest in the final part of the RS and still keep Conference identity (Conference winners rewarded and 3 guaranteed PO spots).

Yea. lets vote like the real NHL GM's. Can we have a virtual meeting in sunny SoCal too? I like the vote option though. I think it would be fun. lay out all the pros and cons of both, present the choices and have the leage GM's make a mandatory vote with 2/3rds majority being the deciding factor. Why not have some fun?

This isn't even final on the NHL yet...

Anyways, I don't support doing our playoffs different from the NHL even the slightest. This new system is awesome, don't confuse it with baseball as we have another round of playoffs, which IMO makes it very different.

Our schedules would change as well next year - just like the NHL's is. 58 games spend playing EVERY NHL team twice, it becomes a matter where we'd have a few teams you don't face- conference has much less impact on regular season schedule.... That's how I saw it

Note: Free Agency was considered, but is not possible to implement, how many times do we need to say that? Sometimes it's time to move on from something Mik.

once again, i'm not referring to Free Agency to advocate for it again; it's simply an obvious example of something we make completely differently from the NHL as it's deemed it is better for BBKL.
It shows the argument "the NHL does this, so we need to do the same" is bogus.
