The real question is.. what to Flyers fans do to his precious R8?

Fisher is also what 6 years older than Steeg, neither are on good contracts though.

Even if that is the case, seems strange to go to a team with less ice time. I also honestly think in a deal when your moving for picks you get the best return closer to the deadline than this.
Burke stated the complete opposite in his presser (paraphrasing), "We (Leafs) could not have gotten this type of return closer to the deadline." Which makes some sense, teams are willing to pay more to get a player for longer, additionally Versteeg has another season on his contract, so it is not a rental deal, which is the norm at the deadline.

Versteeg is superior offensively, younger, and no slouch defensively. Not to mention that he is a proven SC winner, I think the reason Fisher got more was because his contract runs longer, which is a plus in a market that has difficulty attracting FA's, I'm sure the fact that he is engaged to Carrie Underwood didn't hurt from a fan interest POV either.

Versteeg is alright value, Fisher's contract is bad. I really don't know how anyone can justify that contract in hindsight, Fisher has only ever topped 50 points once (and that includes 3 seasons on an elite offensive team), and at 30 has little upside left. Fisher brings alot of nice intangibles, but so do alot of other players that don't make 4+. Ottawa thought he would improve more when he signed the deal, and it didn't happen.

I think the flyers did the right thing here. They are gearing up for a cup run and he could be the final piece. The thing that sucks is that Versteeg wasn't playing to his potential in TO. The team and fans deserved more from him, imo. Really it was a trade that made sense. Leafs start getting some picks and get out the clowns who dont want to play for them. I know he had a short tenure and the potential was exciting but if he wasnt gonna put up then he had to be moved. All in all its not a bad deal for both sides. really though...

Evidently he didn't want out, which makes sense, because prior to his quote (taken out of context) last night he never once showed signs of wanting out, or being displeased. The more I think about this deal though, the more it makes sense, not because the value is good, I still think it sucked, but Versteeg wasn't a fit in the top 6 (though he was still playing top 6 minutes), and was taking up alot of cap for a versatile third liner. The Leafs need that flexibility to spend elsewhere. As it stands the Leafs have way to much money spent on non-core players, moving out Versteeg is a step in the right direction, hopefully Komisarek follows suit.

Well, I gotta give some credit to Burke that he is not scared to fix mistakes and pony up. May be finally on a way to a proper rebuild. Hopefully, for the game of hockey and the storied franchise.

This was always a rebuild, Burke stripped 90% of the roster, and replaced them younger more talented players. We are the youngest team in the NHL for a reason. The only reason it is played off as anything else is because of the Kessel deal, but as many people conveniently ignore, Kessel was 22 at the time, besides you don't need high picks to rebuild, but you do for a tank.
