how was it the right move? Our startin goaltender was still Toskala....OUr forward group was still a disaster and our defense was still overrated. Add in the fact that kessel wasn't even going to be playin for X amount of games and I find myself wondering how that can be so. Enlighten me
Our team was still better on paper than the year before, and that team finished 7th. Objectively speaking it's hard to argue that last years team was worst, things just didn't go our way, at all. It happens, and it looks bad now, but it was a reasonable move at the time, and lets not forget that Kessel is still only 23. If he can take the next step in a few areas he can be a damn good player. If not, well then you have an argument.

Do you play poker? If you get dealt pocket Aces and go all in before the flop but end up losing to 2-7 because the board comes up 2-2-K-3-7, was it wrong to go all in with A-A?

Same concept: When the Kessel trade was made, no one put the Leafs as a lottery team. No one. And if you tell me you somehow picked them to be a lottery team that year then I will tell you that your opinion was more lucky than skilled because hockey analysts and reputable publications put the Leafs as a borderline playoff team, missing the playoffs again.

The problem? It is NEVER about if the move was right AT THE TIME. Trades are judged retrospectively. And this trade was an obvious disaster in retrospect.

Kessel, at this point in time in his career does not deserve any benefit of the doubt.

He was suppose to come into this year stronger, more invigorated because he didn't have a shoulder injury to recover from. Full offseason of training, full training camp...bla bla bla. So far? He looks like the exact same player he has his entire career. Now the lack of consistency is being blamed on him not having a number 1 center. What will the excuse be when we get a number 1 center for him and he is still pulling this routine every game?

I've resorted to just laughing at how bad we came out of this deal. Kessels play at least provides some comic relief. ( in a sick twisted way)

You said it was right to make at the time, I was just wondering how that could be the case.

I guess I saw the team in a different light than some did. AKA brutal.

Kessel is on pace to beat his career high in goals, playing with 3rd line scrubs and a guy with 10 games of NHL experience

What? A 23 year old who has posted a pace of 40 goals and 60 points does not deserve the benefit of the doubt? Without a legit top line line mate no less.

Kessel is not the problem. The remaining top 6 are the problem. They would slot on line 2s and line 3s on most playoff teams. The problem is also coaching. we dont have the right coach for this team. Our D and Goaltending is solid. Forward group needs work. Adding even 1 player who is considered Line 1 material will make all the difference in the world. Give it time. No need to panic. We did lose the Kessel trade but it's okay lol. There's still hope.

My top 5:
Sean Couturier
Adam Larsson
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
Ryan Murphy
Gabe Landeskog
Adam Larsson
Sean Couturier
Ryan Murphy
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
Gabe Landeskog

by the end of this season that Ranger stud might move up even more....ive really become a big fan over the season thus far of him. I watch a dumb amount of OHL and he looks like he has what it takes.

i've been reading up on Murphy since Kareem mentioned him to me. Even Don Cherry thinks he goes 1st overall.

Can someone explain to me why BB acquired that 2nd round pick in order to threaten an offersheet for Kessel. yet gave up 2 firsts and a 2nd? Was there a fear that Boston would match the offer? I got thinking about that and wondered. On a side note it does suck to have 3 Canadian franchises in shambles. TO, CAL, OTT..

why can kulemin put up the same amount of goals while playing 2nd line minutes with grabo? What about Mac?

The fact that everyone keeps using the same excuse that he is playing without top line mates just makes my beliefs even stronger. WHY did we give up so much for him when we KNEW we had no real number 1 center?

This franchise unfortunately is in shambles.

Looks like boston is going to get another top-5 pick hahahahahahahahahah. Kessel isn't even worth ONE top 5 pick.

Ummm because Kulemin isn't being tightly checked like Kessel...That's common sense.

The Leafs thought they were good enough to finish middle of the pack the last two seasons, that is why they made the trade, unfortunately it hasn't turned out that way at all, and you can criticize them for that, but at the time there were not many objective observers who thought this team was bottom 5 bad.

Were the observers all drunk off the burke koolaid? Our starting goalie was toskala.............Thats all that needs to be said.

I'd love for kessel to somehow become a more complete player but that is unfortunately not going to happen IMO.
