The main problem is these days it feels like we have half the league not showing up on deadline day.

Adding cap retention can't do that match if the GMs of the teams with cap space don't bother coming online for the trade deadline.
So that's the first thing to look at imo.

That said, cap retention can help active GMs reaching deals and with the stuff Scott has going on Googledocs (and googledocs is what we use for cap purposes anyway) combined with the smaller amount of transactions than we had back in the day, we might actually have a chance at implementing that at this time if the league wants to and Scott cares enough about it.

The cap is going to begin going up so there will be more space to work with in coming years
It's been harder to make deals the last couple years due to flat cap

Scott already does so much unpaid work - last thing I want to do is add work for him. We should honestly be giving him a stipend.

I brought this idea up with the CC and we've been talking about it internally.

With this year's sheet, I went ahead and I've already made salaries as a value that can be dynamic week-to-week just like I do for rosters and positions and waiver status.

If you trade someone and you retain 50%, I can make their salary half for the balance of the season and it won't screw up previous weeks. I'd just need to create some kind of retention "asset" that the other team will have on their sheet so that retained amount goes towards their cap. I'd probably add a box on the sheet that tracks retained salary.

Essentially, the retained salary would remain for the balance of the player's current contract.

The other reason I made salaries dynamic is for a situation like Evander Kane...a player that starts the year under an existing deal, they are either bought out or terminated during the season and then they sign a new deal with a different salary.
