In theory, you could sit on a young full-time NHLer for 2 years at most. If a guy plays 75-80 games in the rookie season...odds are they won't be exempt after their second season is over. They don't stay exempt forever. He's got to deal with having too many players that have to clear waivers and he's forced to trade them away.

The only reason Mik has the ability to hoard is that he's got one of the few self-sustaining rosters in our league. He can trade away guys like Karlsson, Hornqvist, Eller and Compher when they price themselves off his team and he can get 1st/2nd/3rd round picks in return. He turns those early round picks into guys future NHLers but he doesn't have to force them into his lineup right away because he's got a strong NHL-level roster.

I don't fault him for this at all...we all play under the same waiver rules. He drafted Kakko this spring. If Kakko is truly his 13th best forward and he doesn't feel the need to play him...he doesn't have to. This all circles back to old complaints about lottery teams trading their best picks away to the top teams.

kimmer wroteCOLONWe need to obvi implement new free agency system where we cant keep all players all the time.

Unfortunately the toothpaste is out of the tube on that idea but it would've made this league interesting.

We see how a system built basically around randomness in ADHL doesn't satisfy everyone. My favorite method for fantasy free agency is having a FAAB (free agent auction budget) and you bid on the players in an open auction and you can earn back money with in-season rewards through winning in order to replenish your budget.

Between players needing to clear waivers and the rising contracts of young star players...it's getting harder to keep the same roster year-over-year. A team like Mik can trade away Erik Karlsson for draft picks when he's got Heiskanen waiting in the wings.

I'll reserve judgement for the time being. Really depends how much Cliff can improve by the 2021 season.

Lol.

But seriously,

We need one mid-season waiver review the way we have positional reviews.

Beginning and mid season. To limit hoarding.

And I'm someone guilty of hording
We really don't considering how low the gp threshold is. I don't like Mik having 2 full NHL teams as much as the next guy, but there isn't really a need for this.

The need is that there is a limit to how many NHLers are in the league. And if multiple teams begin keeping two teams in their minors then there won't be enough NHLers to go around.

If any team has the means to stash away a few young (under-performing?) players in the minors while they're waiver exempt...why punish them for having organizational depth? If you have to means to draft a lot of players and hang onto them...I don't fault anyone for that.

For you Matthew...you can hoard all the young defensemen if you want. Makar and Niku are waiver exempt for the next two years. It's in the rules...it's your right to play them or put them in the minors if they don't crack your top 6.

Again, if team's can't make the 850 gp threshold then lord help them. It's impossible for Mik to hoard enough NHLers to make that an issue lol!
