In theory, you could sit on a young full-time NHLer for 2 years at most. If a guy plays 75-80 games in the rookie season...odds are they won't be exempt after their second season is over. They don't stay exempt forever. He's got to deal with having too many players that have to clear waivers and he's forced to trade them away.
The only reason Mik has the ability to hoard is that he's got one of the few self-sustaining rosters in our league. He can trade away guys like Karlsson, Hornqvist, Eller and Compher when they price themselves off his team and he can get 1st/2nd/3rd round picks in return. He turns those early round picks into guys future NHLers but he doesn't have to force them into his lineup right away because he's got a strong NHL-level roster.
I don't fault him for this at all...we all play under the same waiver rules. He drafted Kakko this spring. If Kakko is truly his 13th best forward and he doesn't feel the need to play him...he doesn't have to. This all circles back to old complaints about lottery teams trading their best picks away to the top teams.
