I'm wondering how you set this up...did you get the opponents drawn out first or did you just fill in each week?

You've got 21 weeks...8 weeks for divisional opponents (4 teams x 2 games), 10 weeks for conference opposition (10 teams x 1 game), and the 3 remaining weeks for out-of-conference opponents (random or rotated). It looks like really all the work you have to do is figure out those out-of-conference opponents. Once you get the opponents slotted in, then all you have to do is get it where each week jives with your pre-determined opponents.

I realize the season length might vary from year-to-year but why not put the opponents on a rotation? Let's say we play 21 weeks each year and all you have to do is rotate 3 out-of-conference teams between each team...meaning you'd play a team every 5 years. Maybe take one team per division since we've got 3 divisions in each conference. You shouldn't run into any schedule conflicts if your opponents are slotted. The other solution would be to do something similar to the NFL and have schedules based on order of finish in each division. Give the 1st place team in each division the 5th place teams in the divisions in the opposite conference as a reward, the 2nd place get the 4th place and the 3rd place face the other 3rd place teams. You might not see every opponents in that system but it's predetermined.

I don't know what ultimately is the best way set up the weekly schedule. I've worked on something like that before and it's sometimes best to just take one team and get them done first and take them through the entire season and it helps with schedule each additional team. Then, follow with the team that the first team played in Week 1. It's probably tougher if you get the entire week done first before you move on because you're bound to have a conflict. When you get to the last few teams, the games not accounted or schedules for should fit into the schedule without a problem since you had the opponents figured out before you started.

I might post a more formal proposition in the CC forum that we can maybe put a vote so whoever is making the schedule each year has a model to work with.

thats exactly the model i started with and what i proposed way back when that was going through, however your welcome to try and make it work... the #'s don't work.

15 teams per conference is the first notable hick-up, as you either have 1 or 3 inter conference games per week.

then the divisional games, with 5 per div it means you have 2 and a free team... lining up this spare team sounds easy but doesn't work, as you have another division to think about... i know it seems like each week you should be able to plan for 2 conference games, but... 9 (18) or so of the schedules are easy to work out... its the final 6 (12) where things begin to get messy.

lol shit, shoulda read this first before i started typing out the template. It is actually kinda fun and real challenging....ive got 4 columns done..

this is what i started with

you play division rivals 2 times so that is 8 weeks of the schedule
you play other conference teams 1 time so that is 10 weeks of schedule
you play opposite conference teams 3 times so that is 3 weeks of the schedule

in total that is 21 weeks. Is that what you did?
