It's the situation, Thom. Mike smith has a spot locked up in Arizona for the foreseeable future. His stats aren't great and he has a fat contract on a money poor team. So they need a cheap goalie with upside to play along with him. Can't give out another big goalie contract, and doubt they want to expend assets acquiring a different top goalie prospect while Dominguez is playing well. Domingue has done well. I expect it to be a 50/50 split next year unless one does amazingly.
Who knows, as Arizona's team gets better, maybe smiths stats go way up. He's been playing behind a stinker of a team for a while.

When I'm trying to rebuild, I can't nuke my farm system every time I need a goalie. I'm not going to trade you Sam Bennett or this year's 1st for Louis Domingue. It's a perpetual losing situation. I draft a piece I want to rebuild around and then I have to give them up because I don't have a goalie. It sucks.
The real pisser about the trades I've made...I look at Scrivens right now, he's basically the new starter in Montreal with Price done for the year. He was basically a throw-in in the Mike Smith deal. Another rake in the face for me. I'm losing patience with this whole process.
Chasing goalies can be a donkey show I agree. We need to ensure there are too sides to this market pressure we've created.
All it takes is 2 goalies who were backups or less, being waiver exempt, and in the 30 team mirror situation we have made the need for one GM far outweigh the worth of the goalie, especially as a rebuilder. This is hampering guys ability to rebuild.
I think we've all learned from holding goalies hostage and I hope guys are far more reasonable with backups, especially when they aren't bluechip potential guys. However everyone says that but when it's their backup in a bigger role they hold their breath and hope he's Pekka Rinne.

I still remember that year and a half of insults I went through before dealing Holtby away.
As the Caps' system owners kept changing, I was an idiot cause I didn't want to move him for an early 3rd, then I was an asshole cause I didn't want to sell him for a late 2nd, holding him hostage... then I was a total retard cause not even an early 2nd could do it... go figure when I rejected a 1st..
Turns out when I eventually traded him (was Caps' third goalie in that particular moment, November 2011) for Tyler Ennis and a 2nd.. that's actually when I was an idiot.

and that's why I proposed system goaltending in the reboot. address things that we know are issues but don't have a fix for in our current league.

Someone once proposed "if you own the teams starter you are automatically assigned all that teams system"
I believe this was josh or lee. I thought it was a good idea at that time.

What about teams who own 2 starters? And teams who currently own 2 backups?
I believe system goaltenders takes away a big element of what makes this fantasy hockey, and that freedom to build a team as one likes.
There are just as many people on pace to miss skater gp as goalie gp. And Fraser may miss, but he has two solid future goalies. If Scott missed, he'd slide down 1 or 2 spots in the draft. Not a huge deal, especially given be lottery rules. This whole goalie issue is overblown.

I don't think building around 2 backups is really a viable team building strategy anyone is willingly doing? I might be wrong.

I'm planning on stripping my teams goalies, building up prospects, and then buying a goalie in a couple years if none of my goalie prospects work out.

That's the best course of action if we want to make a change. With draft pick compensation or something for guys that have legit goalie prospects

Does Fraser need to give up kuemper and vasilevskiy?

there's no perfect solution at this point.
IF some type of change is made in regards to goalies, people will have to be a little more reasonable and understanding to make it work for the greater good.
