Ehrhoff's contract is crazy front loaded..he makes 22 million the 1st 3 years and only 3 million in the last 3 years. Will the NHL look at it?

doubt it. It meets all the requirments of that rule which was put in place after the whole Kovy dealio.

How do you doubt it? final three years total 3M. 18M paid prior to 12-13 season.


edit: oh doubt they look at it? ye supposedly its legit... dunno how when it clearly voids cap hit.

But wasn't the Kovy deal 17 years and projected playing way past a probably age. This contract is like a 7 year contract of performing. Then a built in 3 year for when he is out of prime. A little more logic in this contract I feel.

The reason these types of deals are considered circumvention under the cap is because the majority of the contract is paid out in the first 3/4 of the deal, leaving little to no motivation for players to play out the contract.

Kovalchuck's contract had a higher annual cap hit, ergo the term had to be longer to spread out the dollars. You need to look at the money being paid out at the beginning of the contract, and in the last few years, not the total years. Years in this case are relative to total dollars (I.E. the higher the salary, the longer the term).
