I loved the fans.....We are crazy. The way it should be. Passion. but yea...would have sucked to be penalized because fans threw shit.

That game to me, had a gold medal Olympic feeling to it. I hope the run goes all the way.

You can have passion and be crazy without lettering the field with all that junk.

Toronto I recall ripping Vancouver fans to shreds for the rioting and we go and do this bush league stuff. Obviously on a much much smaller scale here with what happened but despicable none the less.

If we lost that game because of that call I'm sure it would have been a lot worse. Since the Jays won the players were saying they were OK with the call but allowing the game to be decided by a batter interfering intentional or not by stretching his arms out with his bat right as the catcher throws the ball to the pitcher would have been a dangerous precedent to set.

That throw is all on Martin though and he knows it. After Joey bats hit the home run you can see him with his hands together saying something along the lines of "thank god".

Based off the rule book as well, it was certainly the right call.

It matters in that a borderline call where the ump did call it dead was overturned that very likely could have ended the Jays season. If Choo was standing still Id have no issue but I didn't like that he stretched his arms and bat towards the plate just before Martin throws.

Luckily it's water under the bridge now, but that would be all everyone would be talking about if that was the deciding run.

it's been pretty clear since the playoffs started. Easily some of the worst calls i've seen in 30 years of watching baseball. The jays strike zone seems to be twice as large as the Rangers during the entire series.

It was a classic case of rules needing discretion. Refs are fully empowered to not let a call like that go through. Instead they decided to follow the rules to a T -- which often is a terrible thing to do.

Choo does the same routine every at bat and he didn't just do it as Martin was throwing. The guys arm was outstretched for a fair amount of time and then Martin lackadaisically threw the ball back.

Regardless of not liking how something went down, the right call was made and they even cited the rule book during the broadcast to explain it to everyone. Those in the stadium of course didn't hear all of that so it's understandable they were angry but still disappointing the way they showed their anger.

You'd have to go and watch the broadcast again and get the answer from them. They explained it well enough iirc. I just can't remember exactly what was said.

I had the Jays radio call for audio rather than the American broadcast and their take on it was different. The main point was it was a dangerous precedent and not the type of play that should decide a playoff series. Imagine players trying to disrupt catcher's throws back on a regular basis, catchers would become more careful but it's not the intention for tossing a ball back to the pitcher to be an important event that decides games. Like Shiv said the umpires could have chosen not to let it count since that type of play is an extremely rare occurrence and a case for batters interference could have been made based on how close to the edge of the batters box Choo's bat was.

If the Jays won in that fashion of course I'd be happy but I don't think I'd be bitter if it didn't count since it would be so cheap.

if he hadn't, the run would not have counted.

i dont think anyone with common sense is arguing that the rule should not be applied in this case. it's a rule, period, but the fact that the ump called the play dead, prompting everyone to stop playing, then decided lol jk run counts is a big problem.

he's assuming had he not called the play dead that odor would have scored.

that's a real dangerous precedent to set - guessing about what would've happened during the play. especially considering the bottom of the inning saw three consecutive horrific errors - who would've guessed that? perhaps odor trips and falls before making it to the plate?

the whole way it was handled was just so bad.
