The difference is, Hartnell has 5 years left on his contract at 4.75mil, whereas, RJ has 3 years left at 4.6mil.

Just spoke to my buddy who lives in Philly and has connections in the organization. Says that Hartnell felt he was being misued and wanted 1st line minutes this year. The Flyers said no so Hartnell asked to be dealt.

They were picked a few spots apart in the draft and Leafs were linked to Brayden and he went earlier. He was also always ranked as the better prospect than Kadri when they were coming up in the NHL and I have seen them compared a lot by Leaf fans.
