MTL fucked up that Subban contract royally, should have signed him long term when he is willing to sign for what would have been a discount. Now he is going to get PAID.
Disagree. Bridge contracts are the way to go in situations like that.
I agree with shiv. This is just an example of how it can be a good thing for the player and not just the team. Subban, Couture and Giroux are examples of how taking a bridge can actually make you more in the end. Teams benefit from the lower cap hit and possibly avoiding a contract that a player doesnt deserve. I wish more teams/players would do this.

If the player is unproven like Kadri sure I could understand the motive behind a bridge, but I believe everyone knew what they had in Subban and it is going to cost MTL a lot of money. Rumours had him asking for 5.5 long term and now they are going to have to pay him at least 7.5i I'd think so that's 2M of cap space they've lost per season. I think Montreal over played their hand and thought there was no chance he was going to win the Norris. I think it was a bad risk to take on Subban and also wish we didn't sign Kadri to a bridge since it will cost us long term. For Kadri the bridge was the only option since Nonis paid Bozak, Clarkson and gave away cap space to LA leaving nothing left to lock up our potential #1C long term.

Do you not think EDM made the right move locking up a young star like Hall or NYI locking up Tavares? If NYI signed Tavares to a bridge contract imagine what they would be forced to pay him now. Why do you think it is better for MTL to have to pay way more to Subban now then if they signed him long term last year? Could you actually make an arguement that Tavares should have signed a bridge since that is apparently the way to go in a situation like that? I would much prefer to lock up a young star at below market value than get two cheap years and then have to pay significantly more for a lot more years than the bridge.

This argument you've made looks complete in retrospect. I don't think Subban was thought to be close to winning a "Norris" before last season began with guys like Weber, Suter, Chara, Keith, Pietrangelo out there (IMO Suter should have won it last year anyways but whatever). Montreal just got incredibly unlucky. But I think it was the right decision. As a Toronto fan though, I love the way the events transpired. Can't wait for Subban to get 7.5-8M

Agreed I was making a point in retrospect, but it's a GMs job to make those tough decisions and project their players and sign them to an appropriate deal. There is more risk signing a young player long term and it could backfire (Tyler Myers?), but sometimes a bridge is bad business and long term is the right way to go. There are examples of both good and bad, but I think Tavares is the best example why I don't agree that "Bridge contracts are the way to go in situations like that."

That's a head scratcher for me. No doubt Downie is the more skilled player, but I guess COL wants to sacrifice skill for experience. Talbot is also a C and COL is so deep there that they converted a good one in ROR to wing. Thought more teams would be in on Downie for that price.

Subban down right had a bad year before signing that bridge contract. I don't think even the biggest homer of habs fans can honestly say they saw a Norris in subbans future let alone as early as last season.

I also do not believe MTL got unlucky. Yes they have to pay Subban a rather large salary now but I believe his hold out and the fact they would not give him term was an eye opener for him. I believe his consistent work ethic and his off ice professionalism went through the roof last year as compared to previous seasons. I think because of those negotiations Subban brought his game to the next level and MTL ended up with a better player because of it.

I also think this helps MTL long run. Bergevin set a presidence for his organization with that contract. Not only can he now say "Subban took one so that is what I will be offering you as well" but players in that organization will now see that those contracts can be beneficial for both parties if they as players continue to produce. When players like Gallagher and Gally come out of there ELC's they are probably going to get similar bridge contracts which should help with Cap structure at that point.

Yes Montreal has to pay more for a player now then they possibly could have but overall, the Subban contract and rise of play was nothing but a good thing for MTL

Why has downie now been traded 3 times? All I know is traded 3 times in his first 7 and a bit years while being an effective player, there has to be something behind the scenes. Maybe his complete piece of shit mentality on ice translates off of it. Who knows, I just think he has to be doing something to be traded this often.

I can't believe he went back to philly. Holmgren is just doing circles now lol.

Solid argument... Still think the franchise is in better shape if they sign him to a 6-8 year deal at 5-5.5, but the points raised about a precedent for future contracts and possible motivation Subban gained from sitting out are points that can't be ignored and help cast the situation in a positive light instead of just looking at all the wasted cap space Montreal will now have from not signing him long term earlier.

People who are deaf dont have feelings, because they can't hear mean words.

Therefore it's easy to trade Downie and not worry about backlash.
