In light of this new evidence I change my opinion.

Please instruct as to the specific number he occupies.
I told you, top 10-12. No way you can get to 20 IMO. I'd like to see you try
Well Lets Try: Dmen (under 32) i'd rather have

1) Subban
2) karlsson
3) Weber
4) Suter
5) Keith
6) Drew Doughty
7) John Carlson
8) Kevin Shattenkirk
9) Oliver Ekman-Larsson
10) Alex Pietrangelo
11) Kris Letang

Therefore i'd take Dion 12th...

also - a pretty good look at the NHL's top 50 dmen here:

Why under 32? the argument wasn't age only that he was not in the 10-12 range lol. That's like making an improper graph to make the results look more impressive lol

That is a very reasonable asking price for a #1 defence-man.
I don't think there are 30 NHL d-men deserving 7mil+ contracts.

btw... google roster submissions yo
We are watching a different sport because I am hard pressed to name 10 better, much less 30.

And I thought I did it?
Rather easy to name 10 when you actually think about it. However it is hard to name 20. Given the importance of Dion to the Leafs and the fact there aren't many high end defensemen UFA's this year, (markov and boyle who are older and injury prone) I expect Dion to get 7. Do I think that is high, yes, but given everything he is probably worth it.
D-men I'd rather have on my team than Phaneuf for the next 7 years:

Weber
Suter
Doughty
Pietrangelo
Subban
Ekman-Larsson
Karlsson
Keith

Because the contract is for 7 years...Dan Boyle and Chara don't apply.

Arian wroteCOLONYa I thought he was overrated too til these guys told me and I actually counted. He had his mistakes at times but who doesn't. especially with the minutes he plays. We really need another big minute d-man on our team.
Yep... I think the problem is that so many people have this conception of a #1 defence man as someone who rarely makes mistakes, eats big minutes, dominates the opposition and is generally flawless. That is great, the only problem is that these players don't exist. It seems that every #1 d gets picked apart to some extent in their respective cities, I've seen Preds fan complain about Weber, Pens fans complain about Letang, Bruins regarding Chara etc. However, the hatred seems to be the worst in Canadian cities, no doubt because of the size of the fan-base, and media. There is no better example than Jay Bouwmeester, IMO. Last season he was an overpaid, and underproductive top 4 defenceman in decline, he gets traded to St. Louis and a few weeks later he is a lock to make Team Canada. You can't make this shit up...

Why do people make Letang sound like Jesus? He's a great fantasy d-man. But he is not in the same realm as Dion on the defensive side of the puck. One could argue on the offensive side he benefits from playing with Crosby which inflates his stats. In fact a player like Orpik often masks Letang's mistakes.

I'll take Dion over Letang every day of the week <--- as would the Pens IMO. If the Leafs offer the Pens Dion for Letang, that deal gets done instantly.

I counted 22 just looking at a list of team names, a few were toss-ups, and a few of them were geezers I wouldn't prefer to have at the same money.

I think the numbers showed that his stats didn't take a dip when Crosby was out? Not certain, was a while ago.

so you are changing the argument. All good just wondered how we went from arguing he was in the 10-12 range in the nhl to 10-12 in a certain age group.

for the record, he and JJ are very comparable to me. Both are tier 2 number 1 dmen in my books. Those of you that take offense to this should watch CBJ and see what he is doing out there.

In my mind there are 7 undisputed top defence-man (Keith, Chara, Weber, Suter, Karlsson, Doughty and Pietrangelo), and then a bunch of guys who fall under the same tier, Phaneuf included.

exactly

i was thinking 'long-term franchise dman'

Boyle, Chara, Timmo, etc... are too old to lock up at 7 years

When Crosby was out, Malkin was putting up a 110 point season.

Even if you take Current d-men, Phaneuf is top 10.

Chara is probably the only one who cracks the list despite being older.

Subban is also debateable btw. FYI, Subban was 12th, yes 12th, on his team in SHTOI/g last year LOL.

Johnson is quite mediocre, the eye test, and the numbers demonstrate that.

As for your earlier point, I think Phaneuf is 10-12 irrespective of age. I'm not sure why Shiv and Steve are excluding defenceman over the age of 32, but then again, Steve had Carlson in his top 10, so...

Also, if you took away ALL of Ryan Suter's PP time last year, he STILL played more time/game than Subban. Telling of why Suter deserved the Norris and the media/fans in general rate d-men largely by offense.

Last three Phaneuf games: Staal, Semin, Kane, Toews, Hossa, Perry, and Getzlaf have combined for one goal. Sign Dion ASAP.
