you dont know the reference to having a "life of a dog"? Dogs love lazying it up when theyre not running around like maniacs. Humans have often expressed how their life could be as simple and mundane as a dog's life whenever they encounter some sort of a stressful or complicated situation. It's been known and used in many continents and languages of different ethnicity around the globe. Us Koreans in particular, reference anyone who is lazy or unmotivated, as someone having a "fate of a dog" and is actually used to ridicule that said individual for having such shit attitude.
Hence, you can see the usage of "dog days" of summer, as people in the hot blazing summer days want to do nothing but lay down or sit back and be as inactive as possible under the shade to avoid hypertension/dehydration. Much like what a dog would be doing.
