Books (and what to do with them)

Post by Chris »

So I moved back home awhile ago and I'm still trying to decide what to do with all these books I have. I have a collection of around 3,000 books, not including my Dad's collection of 8,000. I (had) have three bookshelves, but that's obviously not enough. My Dad volunteers at a book flea market and there's only so many he can take. A lot of the books I have are generally novels and such. I want to pare down my collection to around 1,000 -- I have a rough idea of what books I will be keeping.

What can I do with them? Donations might get them destroyed and I don't want that.

My interest spans all over the place. Crichton, Graham, Robyn, King, Clancy are some fiction writers. Other, more in my range of interest, are Camus, Kafka, Whitman (his collection). Then there are much older stuff like Goosebumps. I'm not a hoarder, just unsure what to do with them.

Well, I'm waiting on my sister first before making any commitments with regards to certain novels that you will all voraciously eat up.

Well, I'll be happy to take any Tom Clancy novels off your hands if your sister doesn't want those. My book collection essentially consists of all the top fantasy novels of the last 20...30 years. Wouldn't mind adding some other fiction to it.

Billy, if you're into the ASOIAF series, you should check out some stuff written by Scott Lynch, Joe Abercrombie, Steven Eriksson , Ian Esselmont, Daniel Abraham, Guy Gavriel Kay, Scott Bakker....to name a few.

Steven Eriksson & Guy Gavriel Kay +1

- to Lynch and Bakker...

although way way hyped now, George RR Martin is the absolute bomb.

Wish i was still reading as much for pleasure... but almost entirely concept/work/policy/theory related now.

didn't like the Bakker series that much, but I through him out there because he is regarded to be on the same level as Eriksson and Martin by a lot of people.

Lies of Locke Lamora (not sure on the spelling and am to lazy to check) was great but Red Seas Under Red Skies was not on the same level.

One of the best reads I have had in the last 3 or so years was the Fionavar Tapestry, great stuff. I'm currently reading "Stonewielder" by Esselmont who is co-creator of the Malazan world. Good so far.
