LTIR question

Post by bma »

Can it be retroactive to last season?

To be specific, I'm referring to Sidney Crosby. If he was placed on LTIR last year to end the season..can the mandatory 3 weeks be carried over from last year?

The reason it doesn't make sense to me is because if Player A has Injury X at the end of Season 1, then becomes healthy, then at the start of Season 2 goes down with Injury Y.

Also, LTIR should be seasonal. If a manager risks putting a player on the LTIR to start the season, that is a risk/reward thing for GP vs competing week-by-week.

If the player ends the previous season in LTIR and never is set to active there is no reason why the clock should reset, ImO - same as the actual NHl.... But obv this requires a cc discussion.

It doesnt make sense for one simple reason, a player placed on LTIR needs to remain there for a minimum of three weeks, so if a player were hypothethically placed on LTIR with a week or two weeks to end the season he would be subject to an additional week to two weeks on LTIR to start the following season which is nonsensical for obvious reasons.

Obviously it has details guys.

But think about it:

-same injury ( no pre-season games or stuff)
-has not returned since in any way
-still gm's choice to have him START on LTIR (this removes Kareem's point about unnecessary carry over).

You can't simply pick and choose when to allow carry over, and I'm fairly certain there is no carry over in the NHL to begin with. LTIR resests every calendar year.

100% BFLTI has carry over. Sid is on it.

It doesn't make sense though Nick. If Team A puts Player X on LTIR with 2 weeks left, does this mean they MUST start that player on LTIR the next season? What if that player is healthy by then? There are so many scenarios the rule creates where the carry-over either unfairly helps or unfairly hurts the team with the player on LTIR. Better to keep it simple and reset every season.

LTIR is ALWAYS retroactive to the point of the injury.. simple.

That is easy to say but it is a grey area when rolling over from previous season. There are possible scenarios that can happen beyond our control and knowledge. We need to define this and get it into cba.

for example(hypothetical): Travis Zajac finished last year on LTIR because he had a pimple on his ass. It healed in the off season and he began training camp totally healthy. Then he blows out his ACL and is placed back on LTIR to start the season. What you are saying is that technically it would be retroactive to last year when in fact it is two different injuries. I know we could differentiate but that introduces subjective decision making. So i guess this is a good question. Is LTIR retroactive to "THE" injury or is it retroactive to "ANY" injury?

I read it and i agree. Thats why i made the thread in CC but this seems to be the place where the discussion is occurring. I am sure we can hammer out the details and decision on this one pretty quick.
