John Michael Liles: 6G, 40A = 46PTS (76GP)

Presently they are both below average defensively, to remark that one is better across the board as of today, is laughable.

And just for clarification, even in his prime Kaberle was never as good a skater as Liles, nor did he at any time possess the velocity on his shot that John Michael Liles does. There is no question who the better overall defenceman was dating back a few years, but that is no longer the case, nor was it ever the case that Kaberle was better than Liles "across the board."

Leafs fans are not going to like this guy at times. Soft and can't play in his own end.

So was Kaberle, and he was adored in Toronto (prior to negating a deal for Jeff Carter).

Then the fans saw we had success after Kaberle was dealt. A few McCabe style giveaways and he'll get his fair share of hate. I'm willing to give him a chance though because there's no doubt he has good offensive skills and is a true puck mover, which our d core was seriously lacking before today.

As said earlier, Kaberle for Colborne, Liles, and 30th overall is looking pretty nice right now.

The honest truth about the deal is that it's still up in the air. We've had 2x 30 goal seasons from Phil, Boston has got about 3 money shifts in the playoffs and a pretty meh season outta Seguin.

Also the complete cycle between the teams makes more sense:

To Toronto:
Phil Kessel
Joe Colborne
John-M Liles
Stuart Percy

To Boston:
Tomas Kaberle (for 1 year @ least)
Tyler Seguin
Jared Knight
Dougie Hamilton

you can't add the two deals up to justify it, both very seperate deals. You won one and likely lost the other but only time will tell. In the bruins eyes, the potentially won the kessel deal and the second one helped win them a cup so I think they are extatic with both.

In current play the Leafs are head and shoulders above, 62 goals vs 11.
And although the Bruins won the cup, I think they win it easier with Phil and his PPG playoff play over Seguin's 2-3 good shifts.



Long term is what will decide the winner of this deal, and although it's looking rather bad giving them the #2 & #9 overall selections, there is still a chance that Phil is a better player then either of them, and that'll be a win for the leafs IMO.


#2 & #9 probably could have landed us Richards though... so value loss given all known variables is bad, but if judging a trade post-hoc, it changes day-by-day.

I agree with everything other than this comment, Boston could not fit him in cap wise. You solved their cap issues and I am willing to bet that if boston somehow managed to keep phil they would not have made the deal for Horton and certainly do not have the cap space to land Seidenberg who imo was, other than Thomas, their playoff mvp in the last two rounds. Keeping Phil changes alot of things for the Bruins and could likely changed the outcome of Boston's year this year. In a weird way that trade helped their team become what it is today.

Shooker is right on the money. In a cap system and especially where Boston was at the time with Kessel, there is no way to fairly validate a trade just based on pure assets exchanged. Everything has a trickle effect. Boston could not fit Kessel and Toronto paid to get a young sniper. It was a good situation for both teams at the time. No one could have guessed that Boston would have gotten the 2nd overall pick but thats the risk. So in hindsight, would Toronto do the same trade now that they know the players that were drafted? who knows? many armchair GM's would say yes others, no.

Would Boston have a cup right now without Kaberle? Who knows? So for simpler minds in simpler terms, Boston wins the Kessel deal, Toronto wins the Kaberle deal. Boston now has a cup and will probably not retain Kaberle, Toronto made a nice trade with one of the picks they got. Everyone is happy id say.
