Tips From the Champ - Building a BBKL Winner: Tip #1
Tips From the Champ - Building a BBKL Winner: Tip #1
Now, these may be a little controversial and some might not agree but I don't care. My 2 BBKL championships will block my vision (yes, stolen from Patrick Roy.. kinda ). I'm going to give tips on how to build a winner in this league to hopefully help some of you guys. These tips I will fully endorse and actual strategies I use myself. Use them if you'd like to and feel free to ask me on msn to clarify anything you do not understand.
Tip #1: Trade, trade, trade, trade, and trade
Sitting dormant will get you no where. If you have assets to use such as picks & prospects to immediately improve your BBKL scoring team.. do it. With the way players move around this league it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to sit on these assets and "rebuild". The goal is to win, isn't it? With that being said, obviously getting these NHLers, you want to get them as cheaply as possible, but if you need to add another depth piece or upgrade a pick or prospect, why the fuck wouldn't you? When you acquire a guaranteed quality NHL asset and you're trying to challenge for the BBKL title, there's almost no such thing as overpaying when only moving picks/prospects/depth pieces!! Anyway, if you are active on the trade front, you have a chance to win every single year. Now, you guys might say "well, Kyle has a great team and he hardly ever trades". Ok, sure, but he doesn't have any assets in the cupboard to move to improve either. Therefore he'll be hard pressed to win. If he was man enough to move a few of his stars/quality pieces for multiple assets to improve later on then he could quickly build a winner and sustain his winning ways for much longer. Sorry to pick on you Kyle but that's just how I see it.
Some great examples of what I mean is when I traded for Corey Perry back, or Jonathan Toews, or when Mike traded for Mike Green this off season. A lot of people think he overpaid but he landed arguably the best fantasy defenseman when healthy for a 34 year old Dmen in Corvo and futures. He also landed Ryan O'Reilly who looks to be a stud in he making too. Another obvious choice is when Kareem picked up Duncan Keith for 3 power forward prospects. There are many examples of smart moves like this. If you need more example, scale my trading history .
There is another reason I believe Kyle wil be hard pressed to win and I'll get in to that in the next installment of Tips from the Champ. Anyway, in closing, overpaying is a matter of opinion. If you have quality NHLers, you always have assets, remember that .
Until next time.. good luck

Hard to argue with the results. Though, I don't think you need to make a run late or mid season to win it all, it is definitely one way of doing things, but I think a championship core can be built in the off season and tweaked during the year, though there is a ton of risk in that method (core players going down to injury, playing below expectations etc.), I admit. Still, I believe it can be done.

Lol, yes, you are a supa-sta. You are obviously an excellent fantasy manager and you had your way with all the not so excellent managers that were part of this league when it began. That in conjunction with your obvious skills, means you were able to have an absurd amount of extra assets and could afford to overpay for the hot stat stud of the year.
Its not that i dont like trading, it just that i cant spend 2 hours a night 7 days a week chatting about making a trade and i am stubborn so that hurts my deal making on a weekly basis. I will make a couple moves when i need to. I feel i made some questionable moves at deadline that hurt me more than helped me. Your formula is great and all, but for a few of us, it was pretty obvious from day one. You just proved the attack early on the weak method was very rewarding to building an amazing team on multiple occasions. You tell people to trade and not rebuild but you are saying that from a position of amazing riches. There is no doubt that you deserve your victories, but knowing what we know now and the managers we have i think the balance would be quite different in the league from East to West. I know that i tried my hardest (as we all should) to trade away over-rated picks or prospects for proven talent to try and win now. Like that stunt you pulled last summer was pretty damn sweet to watch if i wasnt your competition. "oh i think im gonna rebuild and start over" knowing full well that the majority of the league still didn't "get it". The ridiculous over-rated value of picks and unproven talent was clearly the proper path to take in pulling such a nice move like the one you did.
So you can post all the tips you like, it wont help, because you are one of a kind. You have an obvious car-salesman skill with talking and mind bending tactics along with great prospect knowledge and general fantasy know how. That's the winning formula. Now that we all know what you're about, i dont think it would be so easy.....

I love it Kyle. But again, these are just tips on how I do things and if people want to implement them in to how they do things too, great. These "tips" shouldn't be secrets but for whatever reason they seem to be for most. Also, pm'ing back and forth takes 5-10 minutes a day, you're surely on bbkl for longer then that most of the time?
Anyway, I used your way as an example of the way I would never do things. You're a great guy and I wasn't attacking you personally. Believe it or not, these post are trying to help the league get better!
Oh and yes, in the beginning of bbkl things were ridiculous but everyone was on a semi-equal playing field. Some got it, some did not. And Kyle, have my deals gotten any worse?
Ps.. there will be no tactics this year, I'm 10000% not competing. I'm stepping aside for the good of... I won't finish that last statement lol.

So you will have an excuse for not winning it this time around and will make it sound as you still have a perfect record lol, 2 wins for 2 tries.
