So with the "COLON" issue I see is related to us needing a language update that needs to be done in addition the PHPBB software being updated. I saw the comment on a forum post about these forums.

Re: WTF happened to forums?

Re: WTF happened to forums?
I don't have a lot of control over how these forums work or run. I don't pay for or manage the forums itself. I have admin rights but I'm not the "owner". I'm more frustrated that whoever updated the forums didn't contact me or at least didn't make themselves available to answer questions.
That all being said, there's not much that can be done. I've gotten used to this by now. It's not exactly how I want it but it's still mostly the same.
We can explore forum options for next season. I don't want to abandon this forum all together during the season but it would be nice if we can have something that we can manage ourselves. I'd rather have the ability to take this forum over from Mike or whomever is managing it and we can get things how we want it. It doesn't make a lot of sense to have someone doing this behind the scenes but aren't actively part of the league nor are they available to respond to any requests.

I agree - using the new unread posts quick links works just as well for me. I think there is overall some decreased activity... but who knows. And yes - would be great if we had control over the forum...Shoalzie wroteCOLON ↑Mon Dec 19, 2022 6:50 am I don't have a lot of control over how these forums work or run. Re: WTF happened to forums?
no reason we can't switch forums

"View Active Threads" is still my preferred way to quickly find the threads with the most recent activity. There's even a dropdown menu towards the bottom that allows you pick how recent or far back you want to see posts. By default, it's the topics with a post from the last 7 days.

Re: WTF happened to forums?
Of course. I actually sent him an e-mail when the initial update was happening when it kicked me while it was going. I don't have any idea who was on at the time that was doing this update to the forum. I assumed it was him but who else was previously an admin on the forums?
Re: WTF happened to forums?
It’s not that it’s not possible to do this. It’s just the fact that this place feels like a ghost down and imo it directly coincides with the forum update.Shoalzie wroteCOLON ↑Mon Dec 19, 2022 4:19 pm "View Active Threads" is still my preferred way to quickly find the threads with the most recent activity. Re: WTF happened to forums?
The most likely scenario is we just do another PHP forum at a domain that I can manage and maintain. The perfect scenario is I backup the current forum database from here and run it at a new address so we don't lose our past activity.
I'd probably do this in the offseason...I don't want to deal with this going dark during the season. I'd shoot for before we do our draft (some time in May).
I'm going to assume the forum lives on BBKL.ca (which I believe is owned by Mike Morris). I might buy a separate domain since I already own webspace. The PHP software is free, you just need a place to host it. I might do a test run of a forum on my webspace. I'd prefer to just take this one over rather than start over.
It'll give me some time to read up on how to manage and maintain a forum. Obviously, I'll have the ability to update the software when necessary and make sure the forum is to our liking.

Re: WTF happened to forums?
ProBoards seems to the best turn-key option if you want to just start a forum immediately and you don't want to deal with managing it.
My thing is I don't want to throw a decade-old forum in the trash. PHP is very customizable and is generally very reliable if you keep the software updated. The software is open-sourced. I just need to do some research on what needs to be done to manage it.
ProBoards seems like a good option if you're starting a new league. Worse case scenario if we had to start over with our forums, we might just do ProBoards for the 2023-24 season. I wouldn't want to build a PHP forum from scratch when ProBoards would be fairly simple to run and maintain right away.
