We might not have an actual system for a retaining salary but this is basically a system where teams with no cap room have to ship off a good player for a reduced return so they can keep other players. Klingberg is an interesting case because he's on a one year deal...might get more or might get less on the next deal and maybe with a different agent, he'd take a deal with term this time around.

I really wonder...are teams in this league more scared off by the age of a player or is it their salary? Klingberg is 30 and making $7 million. He's 4 years removed from his most productive seasons. Guys could still be very productive at 30 but rarely is a player's production going to match their actual salary. Young players out-perform their early deals and declining vets get overpaid later in their careers. There's definitely a point when good players lose value in this league when their production will dip but their salary will climb because of experience.

Klingberg is a bad bbkl piece. I'd rather have Blackwell.

Good teams don't have 7M cap space and rebuilding teams don't want to pay assets for older players. It's as simple as that, even though teams need GP and assets like Klingberg could potentially be flipped for a profit at some point.

Klingberg also probably isn't worth 7M, 59th ranked D on Fantrax last season and is only offence with not much periphs. At this price makes sense for Luke, but I don't think this is a huge discount or anything.

He's 8th amongst all defensemen in points since he entered the league. He's like most players when they approach 30...they'll stay productive but not quite what they used to be and they seem less appealing as their salary climbs. In leagues like this where salary matters, you want to find comparable production for less salary but those guys are hard to find. You're basically letting guys like Klingberg in favor of someone younger (and cheaper) who could be as productive.

The salary cap keeps teams here from being complacent and lazy. You have to always adjust as guys get paid more and more.
