if we limit retention to 2 years, which I think we should (consistently with what we do with picks), your way Scott would mean retention could be applied only to very short deals... I don't think it would make much sense or be worth the hassle

Again why would this only limit to those contracts with 2 years left at most ? You could trade X player that have 5 years left and retain the first two or the middle two of even the last two years. Why wouldn’t that be allowed? The goal is to make those ugly contracts more desirable. Make those decent contract more valuable. If both gm’s agree to such term, why not ?

It's not necessarily on short deals...it be based on years remaining on a contract. It could be a 6 or 7 year contract but you couldn't use the retention option until the final few years of the deal.

Yes there needs to be some very strict limits if we are doing this. 2 years or less seems fair if this is something the league ends up voting on.

I agree 100%. Retention needs to be for the life of a contract. So if we cap retention to 2 years, you can o ly retain on contracts that have 2 years or less remaining.

Also a cap on how many contracts you cna retain. I think 2 prevents teams from getting themselves into trouble.

Honestly the more I think on it it may not be a bad idea to start at 1. See how it goes (if this is the route the league voted on in a league wide pole). Maybe expand it to 2 if it’s not a total disaster after a few years.

I'd be down for that as well. Worse case it isn't liked by the league, we only have to wait till the end of the season to revert back.

In the end though, I have a feeling if it did happen, it would be right info it. 2 years isn't bad either. If it isn't something the league pikes, 2 seasons and everything goes away.
