Shoalzie wroteCOLONI've been trying think of a good comp for him...he just a unique combination of size and skill and he's got that brilliant shot. At risk of angering my friends to the north...is he the closest thing to Mario in the modern game? Skillful and large in size but doesn't play a big man game.

Modano would probably be my physical comp for another American player but I even think that's slight to Matthews because Modano only scored 50 once. I think Matthews in a full season is easily a 50-goal scorer for the foreseeable future.
To me Mario is more like Malkin. Big - skilled, but not necessarily known as being a sniper. Just a points accumulator with a few big goal years but always more assists than goals.

Matthews is just a pure sniper it seems. I was thinking Joe Sakic, but even then Matthews seems to score way more already.

Matthews might just be Matthews! As long as he keeps his pants on, he'll be an all-time great.

Stamkos was never as good defensively as Matthews already is. People that look at advanced stats know Matthews is a dominant 2 way player like Kap said, but since he doesn't PK I think some fans who don't watch Leafs games still view him like a Stamkos/Draisatl type who is predominantly an offensive force. Matthews has 76 takeaways in 64GP good for 2nd in the league behind Pieterangelo and 14 more than the next best forward, Stamkos never had a season with 50. Matthews also has 51 blocks, 16th for forwards without playing PK and Stamkos once had 40 in 82GP.

Don't most great goal scorers have a top assist man on their line? Hull had Oates. Ovechkin has Backstrom.

Sakic is a good comp...an all-time great wrist shot. Malkin as a Mario comp is also fair.

I think of Stamkos like he's a classic shooter like Brett Hull and really that's most of what Ovechkin is but he's got the ability to score off the rush. You think of guys have their spot on the ice and are lethal with one-timers.

Another category is like peak Pavel Bure who was absolutely electric to watch...guys like him who were so dangerous in open ice. McDavid is scary in open ice but can obviously weave through defenses.

I think he's got Datsyuk's stick defensively, Rick Nash body/speed, and Robataille/Sakic shot.

Maybe a better version of a peak Fedorov may be a good comparison?

His wrist shot is better than anything ive ever seen in my life. It’s absurd

Fedorov was a much different breed of skater, don’t you think?

Honestly, it's possible we're just in this new generation of player where the top talents of today might not have any historic comps because they're just too unique. Athletes evolve like all things do.

The upgraded tech and training does not hurt either. Imagine if those old school guys actually took care of themselves and had composite sticks.

So far today I've seen matthews as a better fedorov and marner as a datsyuk comparable by Toronto fans.

By the end of the season Toronto will have two selkes...And still somehow they will have the 18th worst goals against.

He's referring to the Matthews conversation here and the Marner/Datsyuk conversation on HF most likely.

I suppose this is what happens when you put your two best players on the same line - the rest of the team still suffers defensively... Though I'll take 18th defensively vs what we got in previous years.

I was going to say let's see what happens when we have a full d-corps, but that was on full display last night vs Florida.
