Fair assessment on my team… toews’ illness and the Patrick/glass combo in that draft has really limited my team being more competitive with the top teams.

Thank you, good sir, for turning down Steve's offer of barkov for Patrick pick. :D

Top 3 coming tomorrow

Had to change the historical rankings a bit, realized for 2016 I was looking at the rankings after 4 weeks and there were rankings from Jan 2017 later on it that thread so those are more accurate for 16-17 season.

Final team writeups are done. Hope you guys enjoy reading it, it is very time consuming to do, but I know how much I enjoy reading this type of stuff when other GMs do it and share their opinions on GMs/trades/drafts.

Other leagues have moved more to discord for chat and boards have really suffered because of it. You get more chat on Discord, but I like having activity on our boards and threads to share discussion and I think it is a positive for the league and recruitment when you see a league that has daily interaction. Having our NHL Transactions, Injuries & Rumours thread at nearly 6 million views is an impressive accomplishment for a fantasy hockey league and I still believe this is the premier 32 team keeper league on the internet and it's because of the quality of the GMs we have. Unfortunately we have lost some great GMs over the years, but we have added some great new ones as well.

Haha thank you for calling me out, well deserved. I came in with high hopes, but got cold feet. Needed a year to see how players are valued in this league. Treating this as a marathon not a sprint! I appreciate the dedication in writing these up. I may not be as active, but I'm creeping in the background getting a lay of the land.

All good, as long as you are logging in once or twice a week and staying up to date with Fantrax that's the most important.

You have a great team and no need to rush into bad trades as I'm sure that's mostly the offers you're getting right now.

Ya you mean my toews. Glad he’s playing but poor production for his price point. Hoping another offseason gets him feeling closer to his older self… but who knows with the concussion now? He may hang ‘em up for health’s sake.

Matt shouldn't have to apologize for putting himself over in terms of the power rankings in this league. In a dynasty league format like this...he's built a dynasty. He's the standard in this league until someone knocks him off. He's obviously got star players but he's just got an overall strong balance in his lineup and I've praised this before...he's managed the cap as well as anyone in this league.

He's been fortunate Kane is out of his large contract but on the other side of that, I'm going to imagine the Leafs will have to pay Campbell this summer...or that very least, some NHL team will. To keep a sustained run of success, you have to be able to make the right tweaks and adjustments...has made very few moves that hasn't worked out. Having big salaries isn't bad as long as those players are performing. Given what star players go for in terms of salary, his highest salary is Svechnikov at $7.75 million...he's in a good spot right to maintain this balanced lineup heading into next season.

It will be interesting when the following offseason comes when MacKinnon is due that sizeable raise from the Avs but what state will the NHL's salary cap be?

so... to reply to the Nashville write-up..

Matt the main thing is, with this formula, I can't control much of what happens in our playoffs and my luck* there, and so I just focus on growing (or sustaining through cap restraints) the quality of my team. When I moved away from that in the past, trying to force a winning playoff run (that you can't actually force, unless you're named bruyns) I made some bad deals that actually set my team back and further away from winning.
And I am actually more pissed off for some bad deals I made than for not winning yet. And I can live with the bad deals when I had to trim the roster, cause that was almost inevitable, cutting prospects too early in their development. I have a harder time to cope with bad deals at the deadline that eventually didn't change much in the playoffs and I didn't really need to make. So, and this should make you happy, I actually plan to stay away from bad deadline deals that can only marginally improve my team for the playoffs, because they've actually worsened my team for the mid-terms and its chances to eventually win. Losing deals to trim, I'll always have to. Same to get cap compliant (I usually managed not to lose those too badly). But overpaying for marginal immediate improvements at the deadline (or before), that I can stay away from.

You make it sound like using a different strategy would mean automatic wins given my rich roster.
Well, you forget two things:
- playoff luck, and in my conference with several tough rounds you need some to get through all of them
- I'm apparently not as good as you (not easy to be) at recognizing the most effective players to target to have short term success. Going after it that way it's kinda like not playing to my strengths. So, for your relief, I think I'll keep trying to win my own way, which I think still means giving my team a realistic chance to win year after year, even if it didn't happen yet.

* I mean, in our playoffs we still dress players for a week without any chance to replace them under any circumstances, so whatever you do to better your team and give it the best chance to win, it's all wasted when the news come out on Tuesday that the players you dressed are injured and will miss the week. I had to get used to that. No point in making all sorts of efforts to put together the best team for the playoffs knowing that that thing can kill your team's chances anyway
