We're still a month away from preseason. We'll always see the usual late signees or the veterans settling for PTOs just to get into an NHL camp. Probably some vets might come in on cheap short-term deals to fill the final spot in the lineup.

Shattenkirk to Tampa made too much sense...I have to think that's why that happened right away. Jake Gardiner might get the Cody Franson treatment and just have to take a short-term deal or a cheap 1-year deal and try again next summer for a bigger contract.

I don't think teams want to wildly spend in free agency in the cap era. They need to save room for their own players coming off ELC and bridge contracts. The Avs have tons of cap room but they're not out wasting it on every veteran not bolted down. They take a chance on Nichushkin on a dirt cheap deal. They need to save money to pay Rantanen and MacKinnon. It makes me wonder if they were ever in on Panarin...they certainly had the room for him.

Someone will sign Hutton. He can be a serviceable bottom pairing guy

Makes sense, he was already training with them, now has a backup and some leverage if he doesn't come to an NHL deal with the Oilers or get traded

Will always remember him for the 2006 playoffs. Incredible story to watch it unfold. Young backup comes in to replace struggling starter 0-2 down in series, comes back. Outperforms the best in the game in Brodeur in the 2nd round. Goes on to win their first cup in franchise history. Forgettable career after that, but was a special run.

Agreed. Might have been the best playoff run that I've watched to date. Canes vs Oilers was something special to watch IMO.

Sounds like the Mike Fisher thing without saying he's retired.
