Apparently 21m paid out in performance bonuses in the first year, and Carolina had 21m net profit at the gate last year.

Although, it would mean cheaper the following years. Just a lot to pay out up front.

not sure what Montreal is trying to do with a deal that will bring Aho right into unrestricted free agency.. it's not like Carolina can't trade him after the 1st year, so I guess they will pay him, use him like 3 seasons and then trade him when he should still have great value

It should be noted that the offer is on the upper edge of AAV where compensation is only a 1st, 2nd and 3rd round. If he was up to $8.5 million, the compensation would've been higher.

To me, it's a bold move and I think the Canes will look terrible if they don't match. It's front-loaded with salary...that's a downside but he's also their best player.

Good on Bergevin. If the Canes match...he can go away saying "well, at least I tried to sign him".

I'm not so sure. It's not an easy match for the Canes. Mtl and the Canes can also discuss alternate compensation til the Canes match or at the end of the 7 days.

Better 7 than 8 years, I suppose.

So far, just four 7-year deals handed out today. Tanev getting 6 years was kinda crazy but I like the player. Zuccarello and Myers got fair-ish deals...5 years each.

Most intriguing deal of the day was Simmonds taking a single year with the Devils. Kind of a prove-it deal after his '18-19 campaign was such a bust.
