Our team was still better on paper than the year before, and that team finished 7th. Objectively speaking it's hard to argue that last years team was worst, things just didn't go our way, at all. It happens, and it looks bad now, but it was a reasonable move at the time, and lets not forget that Kessel is still only 23. If he can take the next step in a few areas he can be a damn good player. If not, well then you have an argument.

Do you play poker? If you get dealt pocket Aces and go all in before the flop but end up losing to 2-7 because the board comes up 2-2-K-3-7, was it wrong to go all in with A-A?

Same concept: When the Kessel trade was made, no one put the Leafs as a lottery team. No one. And if you tell me you somehow picked them to be a lottery team that year then I will tell you that your opinion was more lucky than skilled because hockey analysts and reputable publications put the Leafs as a borderline playoff team, missing the playoffs again.

The problem? It is NEVER about if the move was right AT THE TIME. Trades are judged retrospectively. And this trade was an obvious disaster in retrospect.

What will the excuse be when we get a number 1 center for him and he is still pulling this routine every game?

Kessel is not the problem. The remaining top 6 are the problem. They would slot on line 2s and line 3s on most playoff teams. The problem is also coaching. we dont have the right coach for this team. Our D and Goaltending is solid. Forward group needs work. Adding even 1 player who is considered Line 1 material will make all the difference in the world. Give it time. No need to panic. We did lose the Kessel trade but it's okay lol. There's still hope.

The fact that everyone keeps using the same excuse that he is playing without top line mates just makes my beliefs even stronger. WHY did we give up so much for him when we KNEW we had no real number 1 center?
