Nate Schmidt looks like a guy who is just super happy to even be in the NHL.

But he's also good.

Did Aston-Reese just get called up? I hadn't heard his name in Pens game before today.

He's been up for a few games. The Penguins aren't very good this year and are desperate for depth.

Yet Schmidt = #51 fantrax defender. 25 pts, kills penalties, and blocks shots. And the simple fact that Schmidt is actually good and Oleksiak couldnt crack the lineup of most NHL teams. Yep I'm really missing out.

The Penguins have been pretty good since the new year. Aston-Reese is a temporary injury callup

Point is they are desperate for depth. As in they are not a deep team.

They're not as deep as they have been previously that's for sure, but 3rd liner Phil Kessel is second in the NHL in points. A few teams wouldn't mind that kind of depth

When was the last time Kessel wasn't on a line with Geno? Lol. That's basically their top line with though Crosby's line is technically listed as the #1.

2 or 3 games ago before before Hornqvist was injured. Phil has played on the third line most of this year

He literally led Pittsburgh's fwd's in ice time today.

1. Kessel
2. Malkin
3. Crosby
4. Hagelin
5. Simon
6. Rust

5v5
1. Kessel
2. Hagelin
3. Malkin
4. Simon
5. Crosby
6. Sheahan

Let's not pretend this is a deep team when guys like Simon and Rust are in the top 6 in ice time man lol!

That's pretty much the way Pittsburgh always operates, they've been putting randoms with Crosby and Malkin for the last couple of years to be able to play Sid, Geno and Phil on different lines. They've been kinda successful doing it.
As I mentioned they're not as deep as they have been in the past, but they're still are a 3 line team, which is more than you can say for most teams.

OK, but you can't sit there and act like they have depth because Kessel plays a few games on the 3rd line at even strength, but still top 3 among fwds in ice time on the team. You try something like that because you don't have the depth to roll 3 or 4 lines. They probably still make the playoffs, but it's a mediocre team bc it's top heavy.

The last two cup winning teams had Kessel playing on his own line, which number you give it doesn't matter, when healthy they'll go back to doing the same thing as they have for much of this year.
It's largely the same roster as last year with Sheahan instead of Bonino (Sheahan btw is putting up better numbers than 2016-17 Bonino) and Dom Simon and Ryan Reaves instead of Chris Kunitz and Matt Cullen. It's a step down, but not "desperate for depth". The other 10 forwards are the same as they have been for the last 2 years.
It seems like you desperately want them to be washed up, but having the worst team shooting percentage in the league for the first few months of the season wasn't going to last forever

What team that employs Crosby, Malkin, Kessel, Letang, and Murray could possibly washed up? You are taking this entirely the wrong way.
