Pens seem to manage ok with sid/geno/Phil/letang/fleury. But ya it's fucking hard if the kids don't come out of the woodwork.

Toews/Kane/Panarin/Keith/Crawford is $38.5m

The major difference is the supporting pieces after that, the Seabrook, Hossa etc... deals are the killers. Also obviously the Pens combination of 5 players is better, even if they're not in the top 100 of all time.

Leafs have already said they were protecting Martin...they think he's important for the development of the kids.

I do agree however, that Smith was a shit signing....I suspect we lose Leipsic to expansion.

Leipisc should be a decent NHLer; but yes, we don't lose anything of value from our roster.

Leipsic has more value than Martin IMO. Martin didn't need protection since his contract is protection in itself since Vegas isn't taking an 8pt forward locked up for 3 more years at 2.5.

I'm fine with Martin just would have rather protected another young forward in hopes that Vegas takes Marincin/Marchenko

ya.. that's what i think too.. since the list will be publicize.. it will really hurt the players loyalty down the road.. unless of coz Shannanan has already spoken to him but not likely the case.. wouldn't risk it if it's the Leafs plan to have him for a few more years.

Just don't like the we don't want to hurt his feelings approach. It's a business and he isn't a core player, I want a cut throat management team who makes personnel decisions with logic not emotion. Lou seems like the old school guy who would want to protect Martin and I'm hoping the new blood like Dubas, Pridham, Metcalf, Charron and Pettapiece can start to shift the team's way of thinking in the future.
