He's going to get #1 D-man money and I don't believe he's a #1, which is one thing this defence really needs. I know #1 D are rarely available, but I can see this guy getting well overpaid.

I'm curious to see where people rank him among the top defencemen in the league.

Too much term is my biggest issue. if you can sign him for 4 years sounds good... but 6-8 yrs, I'm good without.

The Leafs need to be spending money now on players like Shattenkirk, their best chance at winning will be the next few years with their best player on ELCs and they are going to have over 20M in cap space heading into the offseason. Look at how fast CHI turned things around with Toews + Kane. I've been watching the Leafs and the NHL for a long time and they are way closer to being a competitor than people realize and more growth for their young players and a few good signings could go a long way. They have the $ to do it the problem is you still have to convince the players to sign with you.

Some of you Leafs fans don't deserve a winner. Matt pretty much clearly hit it right on the head. If Shattenkirk wants 6-7 years, so what? You well get all and then some of your ROI in the first 3-4 years of that deal. If you win a Cup or 2 are you really going to care that much about him not performing to his contract in the last year or 2 of the deal?
