Greatest player to ever play the game.lightupdadarkness wroteCOLONCrosby 1,000 point
If he played in the 70s and 80s he would easily top 3000 points.

Re: NHL Transactions, Injuries & Rumours
As soft as Crosby is you really think he would score 3000 in the Era of grabbing, holding and rough shit? Not a chance... dude can barely stay healthy now.
Re: NHL Transactions, Injuries & Rumours
yup, insanely high scoring and all that. Crosby is also built with a ghetto booty.Bruyns wroteCOLONIt's more that goalies were terrible.

This, and 90% of the players weren't really that good...not compared to the fitness and speed of today's players.Bruyns wroteCOLONIt's more that goalies were terrible.
No one could have caught Crosby in the 70s and 80s to hook him or slow him down.
Re: NHL Transactions, Injuries & Rumours
Guys, there were tons of stars and dedicated/fit athletes during that period of time that came miles shy of what Wayne did. It lacks logic to dismiss.

I didn't dismiss; I'd say about 10% of players could have actually played in the NHL today.Nick wroteCOLONGuys, there were tons of stars and dedicated/fit athletes during that period of time that came miles shy of what Wayne did. It lacks logic to dismiss.
Gretkzy himself said that Crosby and Ovechkin would have challenged, or even topped his scoring records if they had played in the same era.
Just watch a game from 1982, then watch a game tonight. Major difference in the speed and skill of the game.

I didn't say he wouldn't be better for Montreal than Therrien. I just don't think Montral's roster fits his style great.Chuck Norris wroteCOLONAre you kidding? This is an amazing move for the habs, better than any trade deadline deal. Therrien's dump and chase shit doesn't fit in the new nhl. Julien's possession game is not only more suited to the new nhl but also the habs in general. Stylistically this should help re-energize Plekanec and Gallagher who historically play better in a possession style game.timwebb1212 wroteCOLONDamn, wanted Julien for the Isles and definitely don't want Thierren. Should be interesting to see how Julien does in Montreal, not sure it's a great fit for him stylistically.
Julien created the leagues top pk unit with a much lesser team (in terms of depth) in Boston. Give him Montreal's roster and I can only imagine how good our pk will be. They're going to protect Price a lot better who being hung out to dry a lot lately with real good scoring chances.
And look at what he's done with guys like Marchand, Krejci and Pastrnak... I can only hope he can do the same with some of our forwards.
So to say Julien doesn't fit in Montreal couldn't be further from the truth. You must inform yourself sir.

Can't compare generations. Way too much is different in how players are developed, how they play, competition and the game. I think Crosby would have done just as well as Wayne would have done in today's game had he been raised in the 90s

Re: NHL Transactions, Injuries & Rumours
only thing about that comparison is that crosby or ovi would not have the same nutrition/workout/body building routines as oldies did and might be comparing apples and oranges thats allThe BBKL Insider wroteCOLONI didn't dismiss; I'd say about 10% of players could have actually played in the NHL today.Nick wroteCOLONGuys, there were tons of stars and dedicated/fit athletes during that period of time that came miles shy of what Wayne did. on pure skill alone maybe they'd come close to gretz but in broader comparison of how far out front gretz was vs everyone else in that era VS sid/ovi with rest of the league parity is a bit narrower i'd say

There has been a lot of "professional" debate over this (TSN, CBC, etc...)dave1959 wroteCOLONI agree. Not a chance.timwebb1212 wroteCOLONThis is wrong, I'm sorry. The BBKL Insider wroteCOLONGreatest player to ever play the game.lightupdadarkness wroteCOLONCrosby 1,000 point

sadly we will never see crosby, ovy, mcdavid, etc... play in the 70s and 80s. I think we would have seen at least one of them top Gretzkys scoring record.
Again, all personal opinion. I also wasn't a Gretzky fan, i was a Mario fan...so im bias.
Re: NHL Transactions, Injuries & Rumours
If the NHl nowadays went suddenly from 30 teams to 45 teams so that a third of the league was first and second year players who were not used to playing at this level, scoring from the elite players would get a huge bump, I believe.
In the early 80s it was as though a lot of the top players were playing vs AHLers. A guy like ovechkin would have thrived then.
That being said a 36 year old broken down lemeiux was 2nd in points/gm behind only forsberg in 2002-03. And at 34 years old put up a 1.75 ppg in 2000-01, leading the league. That era wasn't so different than our current era. So lemeiux and Gretzky were clearly on another level.
What bugs me is when you hear people say messier/yzerman/sakic were better than Crosby due to their inflated stats.
I believe as far as centerman groupings go over the past 35 years for talent:
Gretzky/lemeiux
Crosby/forsberg/lindros
Yzerman/Malkin/Thornton/Sakic/Messier
