It's difficult to pinpoint the actual gains the league gets from taking part. It's more about longterm gains. Playing games in the middle of the night over here...it's hard to say how viewership affects the games or if there's actual attention brought to the fact that there are pros playing versus amateurs.

I think some of the positives from these games would include Slovenia gaining more visibility as a hockey nation and you have to believe their program will only get better. Latvia probably got a nice bump in interest as well after a positive showing. I'm sure seeing the Americans continue to compete for medals adds credibility to the sport in this country.

I'd love to see what the participation level is for the sport since Nagano and what the impact of the Sun Belt expansion has had on the sport. Hockey thrives in Canada regardless but seeing the sport continue to grow down here means a lot to the national program and to the NHL in terms of attendance to games and eyeballs being glued to the TV.
