the second best sport on the planet (next to hockey) and has probably the most well-rounded athletes in any professional sport (including hockey).
Here in aus there's 3 "forms" of rugby.
1. rugby union - what you see/play in Canada
2. aussie rules football - absolute shit, i hate it...forget it.
3. RUGBY LEAGUE - i cant get enough of this shit. my fav. sport next to hockey now.
the league is called the NRL...but every year there's a best of 3 series called "State of Origin" where Queensland plays New South Wales. players play for whichever state they started playing rugby in...and every year it turns into a bloodbath.
check it out. these guys are a perfect blend of brute strength, agility, and overall cardiovascular.

My family is really into rugby being from South Africa, but I never really got into it TBH, the only games I really watched were of my sister when she played at the HS level. You definately need to be an all around athlete to play though, no doubt about it. I remember when I was in HS, our mens team consisted of the best athletes from each sport (basketball, hockey, soccer, baseball and wrestling). I think football edges it out though, depending on the position (wide reciever, QB, linebacker etc.) you need to have elite speed, hand eye coardination, strength, vertical, and size.

for sure. what you're talking about is rugby union, which is slightly (but at the same time VERY) different from rugby league.MSP4LYFE wroteCOLONMy family is really into rugby being from South Africa, but I never really got into it TBH, the only games I really watched were of my sister when she played at the HS level. main difference is that league counts your downs, much like nfl. you get 5 downs before you need to kick. so you can tackle the guy, but you cant strip the ball from him. if he drops it, then it's everyone for themselves, but you cannot strip it from him.
what i like about it is how quick it is. you get tackled, you push the ball back with your foot, and you're going again.
ill try and find some actual game play footage so you can see what i mean.
here you go...the first 10 mins of a match...
this gives you an idea of how its actually played rather than just highlights.

I loved watching the State of Origin! When I travelled europe a few summers ago I met a lot of ausi's and I remember watching queensland play with them. It was intense! In the bar I was in maybe even more intense than the euro cup which was happening right around the same time. Its not a sport I will ever get into in canada but if I moved down to aus I could see my self falling in love with the sport as well.
