There is no controversy with Fasth, he is the back-up.
I agree .. for now.

It's going to be tough to keep going back to Hiller in this shortened season with the way the Ducks are rolling and how well Fasth has played.

(before tonight)

Hiller: 3.43 GAA and .880 SV%
Fasth: 1.78 GAA and .933 SV%
Small sample size is small... Hiller is no more an .880% starter than Fasth is a .933% starter.
Hiller is a starter, but is he going to continue to be the Ducks starter? Not so sure. Fasth has been dominant so far this year, it seems as it'll be a 1a/1b thing for the rest of the year. Have to wonder with Fasth's new contract and all though what they are planning, its clearly a worthy controversy.

It is unwise to hedge your bets on a goalie with an 8 game track record, I am confident that the Ducks feel the same way.

That's why they signed him for three million a season? Not to mention he was the best goalie in the SEL. It's more that his SEL success has seemingly translated, not that he has a hot nhl start. I think it's an interesting ordeal. I don't think that Hiller is a bad goalie by any means, but its interesting to wage if Fasth can out compete him or what will happen at this point.

While I agree it's just 8 games, he was awesome in the SEL and is continuing that in the NHL. We're not talking about a rookie off to a hot start. This guy has been playing well in top leagues for a few years now.

When the Ducks have to score many more goals with Hiller in net vs. when Fasth is in net, they'd be crazy to not go with the hot hand. It's not like we're talking about a back-up to Lundqvist going off and benching him. It's just Hiller. He's been above average most of his career, but not some stud that pwns life.

The Ducks took a gamble that Fasth's success after eight games was an indication of things to come, that doesn't change the fact that Viktor Fasth is an unproven commodity in the NHL. But hey, if you want to pretend this non controversy is in fact a hotly contested battle, by all means...

How can you ignore an 8-0-0, 1.78, .933 goalie?

I realize it's small, but he's playing lights out in the NHL right now. Way better than Hiller. Why play a goalie that is playing poor when you have another goalie that is just dominating?

That would mean something if there were a direct correlation between SEL S% and GAA and NHL S% and GAA, but there isn't.

That is a false narrative. Unless you can accurately forecast when a hot streak will begin and end, or conversely when a cold streak will begin and end, it is meaningless, and a poor way to run your hockey team.

You will find that this is difficult to prove with evidence.

So you're saying 8-0-0, 1.78, .933 is useless and you may as well start the goalie that looks much worse?

I guess that makes sense. Might as well start the goalie that gives you a better chance to lose at this point.

You obviously don't realize that it is a small sample size or we wouldn't be having this discussion.

You refuse to acknowledge that Fasth has been the superior goalie than Hiller this season, so there is no point in continuing on.

It's kinda true... 2.9M for a backup goalie is kinda steep. Hiller does however, have trade value in the real NHL. Now these two aforementioned statements, are accurate.

Your problem is that you believe Fasth unquestionably gives the Ducks a better chance to win right now.

Who's pretending? Bruce Boudreau remarked that Jonas Hiller is the Ducks starter, I'm just stating facts.

Ducks have done better with him in net and he's played better than Hiller this season. Until he proves otherwise, yes I will believe he gives them a better chance to win.

Boudreau can say Hiller is the starter. That's fine. It doesn't change the fact that Fasth has been the superior goaltender this season.

Of course he would say that at this point in time, no coach would say otherwise after 8 games. Murray has also said they are fortunate to have two top nhl goaltenders going forward. They aren't going to bail out on hiller this quickly, but they also have all the reasons so far to be confident in fasth, fasth is going to steal many games from hiller this year.
