7.5M you can basically cut a third off for the american players, and half for the canadians.Shep wroteCOLON
For a person making $50,000, that is equal to $16
Weber makes about $2500 per shift, on average.
That's how insignificant $2500 fine is to somebody making $7,500,000 per season.
so 5M is what he makes, $2500 is .05%, which is $25 for someone making $50k
Weber averages 32 shifts a game, 82 games season = 2624 shifts a season (remember he doesn't receive salary during the playoffs).
$5M/2624 = $1905per shift (if you were to break it down by the shift - they are actually paid on a per active day, fwiw).
Now, for Weber that 'max fine' isn't very much.
But for the AHL call-up who makes 67K a year, except for his 3 days up in the NHL where he stacks onto his income (say 550k contract, normally paid out over entire season of 182 days or so, 3/182 * 550 = $9'166, brings his total to 75ish on the year )... I'd wager that $2500 probably stinks pretty bad.
So unless they are suspending, where the fine is then GP and not a dollar value, they cannot fine a player more money based on how much they make. And because of the HUGE salary differences in the NHL, fine amounts are somewhat constrained.
Re: 2012 NHL Playoffs Thread
I know, and the numbers I used were from $7,500,000, and were given on the air. I didn't make them up, etc.
$25 for someone making $50k is nothing.
Yes I know not everybody makes $7.5mil, I also think they can only go so far in terms of fines because if they do what some are suggesting ($10k+), they'd be screwed. As you said, an AHL call-up guy like a Joe Colborne getting fined $10k+ would be retarded!
My point in all of this (and from my arguments from last week) are that there is such a HUGE difference between $2500 fine, and 1 game suspension. And I felt Weber's act was closer to the 1 game suspension level than the $2500 fine level. Like a $10-20k fine for Weber on that act, because of the money he makes, would make sense. Less than a 1 game suspension of money he'd lose, but more than then measly $2500.
But it's comparing apples to oranges. As you pointed out, even if this was a guy making like 650k, while in the grand scheme of things $2500 isn't THAT much, it's much more to that person than to Weber.
There is just too far of a jump from a $2500 fine and a 1 game suspension. Likely in the next CBA, there'll be some middle ground between the two.

Re: 2012 NHL Playoffs Thread
I think part of the issue is that fans, teams, hell everyone, wants there to be hockey justice, the economic fine is just a major deterrent.
Penalties at the end of regulation and fines do not offer any kind of justice. Now Weber answered to the code and fought, which got him off the ice for 5minutes that he probably wouldn't normally do. I believe the ref's didn't call an instigator or anything either -> good on them, but not true to the rules.
Anyways, I agree 100% Shep, this is an area that needs to be improved upon in the next CBA.

Wings are done...sigh. This particular team was a weak pot of coffee...they need tweaking. I'll acknowledge that Nashville has passed them for the time being.

Why wtf?
Guy has 5 priors for the same play?
Pretty consistent, he hits late, he hits high, and he hits to hurt.
Re: 2012 NHL Playoffs Thread
Because 25 games is a joke compared to everything else that has gone on in the playoffs and the entire season. It's completely inconsistent and the NHL suspension rulings are absolutely hilarious.
Hopefully this "example" setting carries over to future suspensions around the league and is not a "one and done".

His hit vs. Seabrook in last years playoffs was 10x worse than this one, and he got no suspension at all.Nick wroteCOLONWhy wtf?

Keith's hit on Sedin, compared to this, should have been a 100 game suspension.
What a retarded hit to use to make an example. I realize he has priors, but still.. Dumb.

Re: 2012 NHL Playoffs Thread
My point is, 10-15 games would have given the exact same message. 25 just looks retarded.
This is on par with Simon two-handing Hollweg in the face, and 5 games less than Simon stomping ..
If there was no injury, it would have been 5-7 games. Injury, give him 15.
ALSO- basically, if every other suspension got WHAT THEY SHOULD HAVE, 25 wouldn't look so ridiculous. With everything else being just SO light, it just looks stupid to give 25 games.
