What I expect is Kostka to continue transitioning his game into fitting in with the Leaf's top 2 pairing even when Gardiner comes back. Also, although he has tons of AHL experience, and not much NHL experience, he is still considered something close to any rookie player just with more seasoning playing with lesser pros. I agree that he's not the greatest Leafs D but 9 games of his NHL career still isn't enough of a sample size to determine his true value either. For one I still think given the kind of pressuring amount of minutes in his start of career, why would he get any worse if he's given sheltered minutes? In fact I see his production rise tremendously if he goes "back to where he deserves" into say a 2nd pairing/sheltered minutes where he doesn't have so much pressure.

Look up all of his year to date right stats right now - playing with/against the top dogs landing you 4 pts in 9 games and all the periphs he's got... it's just as acceptable as any other D in this league, hell I'd have him over Golisoski at this point for the price I paid.

If he goes to playing 20 min per game instead of 30, I'd expect his production to rise efficiently

If Mike Kostka was a 27-year-old career minor leaguer playing with the Columbus Blue Jackets, would he have gone for a 1st + a decent prospect?

I know what I said about Kostka when Cliff dealt for him sometime last week - But opinions definitely change over course of time, and I gave him way too short of a leash to make my opinion that time as well. I believe he was into maybe 3-4 games into the season at the time. I made a very short sighted and silly of a comment in that trade partly because I am a huge James Neal fan as well. Neal essentially won me my ESPN money league because of his goal that resulted in a one goal lead to edge my runner up opponent.

What I realized is that Kostka isn't going to be pushed far away from the role he plays in now, and at the WORST, will be receiving decent role in PK. A lot of people seem to think he is a one dimensional offensive D-man, but he plays both ends of the game. The reason why finally decided to give up that 1st round pick is because I believe in him enough to invest in him. Only time will tell.

People are over-reacting, a late 1st for a guy who looks solid so far. If he keeps it up this is a good deal for paul.

Everybody agrees currently to rather have JML + Kostka over Phaneuf alone yes? Phaneuf has ONE POINT. ONE... and I know a single 1st round pick wouldn't get me Phaneuf. Like iterated, I'd gladly pay a late first + throw-in for Mike Kostka.
Shep, I only realized after you posted here. I'm sorry but I'd still rather Kostka over Franson for what I see in terms of playing time given.

Not to downplay shiv's role here in any way either... he asked so much on top of that 1st and I eventually cut him off telling him that 1st rounder is the only thing he'll get from me for Kostka.
He flips out for 50 minutes

EDIT: I honestly think people that are currently reacting negatively to this trade are actually looking at the Nemisz add-on rather than the first...
