DET/TBL - overpaying for an over-the-hill

Nice talks Scott, good back & forth even if I had to pay up.
To DET:
Colby Cohen
2014 1st rounder (NJD)
2014 2nd rounder (SJS)
To TBL:
Sami Salo
I had to wiggle on what I wanted to pay, but I'm simply down too many bodies, as long as Sami doesn't get hurt UNTIL my other dmen come back I'll be happy with the deal.

In his current team situation, his value is pretty good...as long as he stays healthy.

He's looked very good this year on TBL, except when he hit Vinny with that clapper.

Scott saw me in a tough spot and made sure I ponied up. Anton not willing to talk on '14 picks, not many contributing options out there, and a deal he didn't initially love.... ton of value for a piece like Salo. Scott just needs to let those assets mature and he'll have run away with this deal.
Now, hopefully Salo serves me in the short term well, and ideally I'll be able to re-coup some of the cost once my blue-line is healthy again.

for a contending team I don't think this is an overpayment. there will be many similar deals around deadline time.

I wouldn't have done this deal without getting another alliterative-named defenseman back...the picks were a throw-ins.

No idea how this is seen as an overpayment.

with such presented kinds of a stingy/thrifty-oriented mindset, you dont get to wonder why Nick's team is built the way it is today. Funny when you look at it in our perspective though, isn't it?

Paying in numbers in increasing in value assets for a (quickly) decreasing in value piece? Yes I do avoid moves like this typically, it's very short-sighted and not a sustainable way to make deals - not a model I built my team on.

Very much part of the equation in his value, no ? combined with age and declining numbers in recent years... maybe we're disagreeing in what is considered in 'value'.

Its definitely not an overpayment, an effective, yet older and injury prone D in exchange for a decent but unimpressive prospect, a 1st that is two years away and likely mid round or lower, and a 2nd. Decent value all around.

I'd rather hold onto the 1st in just a few weeks. Will begin by offering Salo for a 1st I guess (when my guys are healthy).

If thats the case Nick. Odds are you upgrade the 1st your dealt for a better one when selling Salo. I would prefer that over having the late 1st + 2nd. Nice cycle when it completes.
