Attention CC: Draft Date

Our league's current format has the 1st Round take place before it happens in the NHL.
That is not fair because a player's value depends partly on which team he is drafted by due to a variety of factors such as roster spots available etc.
I suggest we do our entire draft once the NHL draft is finished.
If other league members can chime in, it would be helpful as well.

I believe the reason we like to start just the 1st round early is so that it encourages our GMs to do their own prospect research instead of drafting based on how the NHL drafts.
I personally like starting early.

I wish we would do the first 3-4 rounds before the NHL does..

It wouldn't make too much sense to do the draft before the NHL draft...I'd prefer to know where these guys are drafted. I guess the equivalent is trading a guy that is a free agent before you know where they sign and for how much but I think knowing what team holds a prospects' rights is key. I don't know why we can't do what we did before start the draft when the NHL draft starts. I can understand the eagerness to start it sooner but our offseason is super long and waiting until June is all that bad.

its like a day or two before the nhl draft starts... likely make it through the first round.

Considering I don't pick until the 4th round, why should I care anyway?

It has nothing to do with being eager. It's about being your own GM and picking the prospect, not just where he is picked. I would support us doing the first 3 rounds before hand, but the argument is made that too many GM's don't know prospects after the 1st.

I've been for an early draft since day one, it's not fair that a seasons worth of prospect research is put down the drain because some GM's want to copy the NHL's draft format, which will inevitably occur if we start after, and unless Detroit drafts a Euro in the later round I don't see the significance in knowing which team takes what prospect...Most of these kids are years and years away from making any sort of impact, by the time they are ready to perform chances are the teams who are strong now, won't be so then.

our draft should be earlier actually. it isn't anybody's fault but your own if you don't know your prospects.

LOL. This reminds me of last year when Fowler was falling in the real-NHL-draft and I was getting messages about how I feel making a mis-pick - Same player was my comment and said honestly despite the belief's of some - and IMO that applies to us doing the draft before hand. Pick the players where you believe they should be going -> and then you can be proven right or wrong instead of just mirroring the NHL gm's.

Both camps have points. It would be nice to know where players end up for depth chart purposes, but on the other hand it's nice to use one's own scouting and not rely on NHL scouts.
I'm happy with sticking to our usual format: try to get the 1st round in before the real draft starts.

we do trade for pending UFAs here in the BBKL... also trade for players that can be traded in real life... none of this changes who the player is...which is what people tend to begin to fantasize about.

I'm all for completing the 1st round before the real NHL draft takes place.
However, i'm fine as well with having the chance to look at NHL teams selections when it comes to 3rd round and moreso beyond that.
I think we should start our draft at least 3 or 4 days before the NHL draft so that we are sure to complete the 1st in time and the real draft comes into play somewhere along the 2nd round.

I think we completed a bit more than the 1st last year, before the NHL draft. We started on the Wednesday before the NHL draft.

I think what we have currently works (getting the 1st round in before the actual draft). Eventually though, I'd like to see maybe the first 2 rounds completed before the actual draft.

id definitely vote for that. and i whole heartedly agree that gms wouldnt do so much research into the players they would be drafting but instead the most coveted players would be from new jersey, or mayde detroit, for example.... that should not determine who a gm drafts in our league, it should about looking at as many players as you can, reading up about every possible eligible prospect and scouring the depths to find any and all info in order to make a smart pick... simply put having gms do less research or no research at all for the draft could mean less gms actually pay attention to the league, leading to eventually the league itself crumbling because it becomes too predictable, maybe im exagarating but i think theres definitely at least a grain of truth... if you dont like reading into some 300 prospects then maybe this league isnt for you
