Notes

Not sure if the Penguins have improved much but:

-Okposo turned into a star after I traded him (FML)
-Adding Sharp and Pavelski while adding depth is the biggest gain for my team on the season
-Extras at each position unlike at the start
-Team built around completely different categories from then till now
-21 new Players on the team now when compared to back then (not sure how many trades that took)

Lol. I've made massive sacrifices in the last week:

Moulson for Downie + Belov
Justin Williams for Hejda + McLeod
Filppula + Brown for Fisher
Vlasic for Orpik

All WTF deals in my world because IMO I lost of all them. But I chased a type of team. We will see if it pans out for me. I know for sure it increases my odds of winning.

Start of the season

Marcus Johansson - Evgeni Malkin - Marian Gaborik
Benoit Pouliot - Henrik Zetterberg - Ales Hemsky
Mats Zuccarello - Brad Richards - Dainius Zubrus
Brad Richardson - Nick Bonino - Eric Fehr

Jonas Brodin Raphael Diaz
John Erskine Alexei Emelin
Patrick Wiercioch Marco Scandella

Sergei Bobrovsky
Marek Mazanec

bench: T.J. Galiardi, Peter Regin, Magnus Paajarvi

cap spent: around 63.1 M

After deadline

Marcus Johansson - Evgeni Malkin - Mats Zuccarello
M.Granlund - Henrik Zetterberg - G.Nyquist
N.Niederreiter/Pouliot - Brad Richards - Ales Hemsky
R.Torres - Nick Bonino - Dainius Zubrus

R.Josi - Raphael Diaz
Jonas Brodin - Alexei Emelin
John Erskine - S.Vatanen

Sergei Bobrovsky
C.McIlhenny

bench: Brad Richardson, TJ Galiardi, Magnus Paajarvi

cap spent: around 63 M

----------------------------------------------------------------

The main thing for me was freeing up space and cap to bring up Josi, along with Granlund and Nyquist.

As far as the lineup goes, basically it is Josi in for Scandella, Torres in for Fehr, Nyquist in for Vanek, Granlund in for Richardson, Nino in for Pouliot (depending on injuries), and got Bob's backup. Plus, maybe the biggest benefit, the added flexibility to shape the weekly lineup.

Eventually, going from Vanek to Nyquist was the sacrifice needed to make it work.

If not for the reduced cap, the plan for the season would have been going into a more aggressive buying mode, but with the cap so low basically i would have needed to lose Richards and Hemsky for peanuts in order to be able to overspend and make my playoffs lineup stronger.
I guess next season will offer a better opportunity for that.

Speaking of the deadline as a whole, i was expecting something a little different.

To me, It's like the early deadline was not factored in; i was expecting playoff teams to get more depth pieces, looks like that didn't happen at all.

There are two things i don't like in having our deadline this early:
- bbkl teams and their seasons will be left at the mercy of the NHL future moves (with salary retention allowed, probably more than in recent years, especially over an extended period), no chances to react, you can only hope you're lucky with what will happen.
- no exceptions were made for goalies, so if a starter goes down and his team goes out and acquire a new one that bbkl team season is screwed

nothing you can do to protect yourself against the latter; as for the first one though, the more depth/options you have, the better chances you have to come out good off the NHL deadline. That's why i was expecting some depth moves by top teams.

btw, i had no problem in anticipating our deadline a bit, while allowing an exception for injuries to G starters.

Such an early date, so much earlier than the NHL deadline, without G exception, with lots of injuries and NHL trades left, gives our end of the season a huge lottery flavour imho.

Like, Shep traded for Minny system. What if the Wild trade for Miller.

Anyway, since it looks like i'm the only one who cared about this, i'll just bring on the popcorns. :)

No, I had concern with such an early date but i'm not in CC and i doubted it would change. The Olympic break and the possibility of major injuries happening at the Olympics is a concern. I wish it could have been just before roster lock after Olympic break. Oh and how about that age old discussion of emergency injury callups during playoffs? That was promised to be a discussion for this upcoming seasons PO's? I am a strong believer that a team should have 1 or 2 emergency in week injury replacements until WED of each match.

I have been thinking about the emergency injury replacement as well. I think it could be beneficial to the league. Gotta save it for injuries though, none of this changing after a player is scratched/benched stuff.
