This offer was rejected by a few building teams for reasons I will never understand (not talking about you Paul, before you go off haha). Just a no brainer for a team trying to collect assets.

I'll speak up for myself, Shiv...no need to hide identities. Good to see you got your guy. Allen and Oduya are quite similar...but you even get more hits from Allen so you get a nice bump there.

This is the classic deal from contending teams that don't want to hurt their active lineup and get better in the process. Throwing a wad of picks/AHLers/depth NHLers in exchange for an effective player isn't always the smartest move for bottom of the standings team. It's tough to trade away established players for a lot of stuff that might not reach that level of value...and if it does, it takes a year or so.

Arcobello is a tricky player to gauge value-wise. He got to play because of the injury problems up front to start the season and it's very easy for anyone to see his numbers up to this point and "chase" those stats at hopes he can put up similar numbers on a consistent basis. It's harder to say that when the Oilers aren't using him the same way now. Right now, the Oilers can't find a spot for him. He put up big numbers in the AHL as a top 6 forward and his best production this year was when he played top 6 minutes but you won't play top 6 on that team when Gagner and RNH and Hall are healthy.

Engelland is the classic throwaway defenseman in our league...he'll play some and put up a few decent numbers but as the 6th guy but he will sit when the Penguins have their ideal top 6 healthy. He's a depth guy...a far cry from trading away a solid top 4 defensive defenseman.

I'm not trying to pick on Shiv but he doesn't have a lot to offer in the way of expendable prospects/picks so it's almost a take-it-or-leave-it situation. He's got all his value in his big club and that's obviously why he's one of the best teams in the league. It just makes it tougher to make deals with him since he's got one prospect, one draft pick and a couple of depth guys to offer. I gave away so much established value in trades in the past where I just accepted a pile of assets when I'm just as safe to just stand pat. I don't get better as a team but I certainly don't get worse either. You just have to find the right time to make a move and have the right dance partner.

Lol @ the same people liking this deal for Arian and then agreeing with Shoalzie.

I'll explain this my side once Shoalzie since you took the courtesy to do the same.

This is actually a very stupid deal by me because it is the classic "impatient" move. Arcobello is sticking with Edmonton - granted, he is not going to be as good as he was to start the season with their injuries, but if you watch Edmonton play, he has been very good. He is also much younger and waiver-exempt. I would go as far as to say, there would be a GM out there that might have done Arcobello for Allen straight up in a month if I waited (but I am not patient).

SO there is a risk-reward scenario for a building team. Yes you lose the more definite asset like an Allen, but with Allen, there is no upside (what you have is what you will always have). With Arcobello, though there is risk, there is the reward that there is "value to gain". Now just because there is value to gain should you take the risk? Not always. But in this scenario, your risk is hedged with additional assets. That is "in case Arcobello doesn't become that player" you get a 2nd, Engelland and Ross - those pieces are not the core of the deal IMO. They're the risk hedgers. They are what will help Arian come out WAY ahead in this deal if Arcobello pans out.

A team like Nick's for example, doesn't need to take a "risk" like this as a definite asset trumps a gain in assets. But a building team? Heck, I'd be making that trade every time.

From your perspective, why trade a guy like Arcobello? His waiver exempt status makes him a nice depth piece to have in reserve so the next time you have an injury up front, you plug him instead of having to make an impatient move as you call it. I know you make it a goal to have the best possible lineup and you don't seem to feel the need to have prospect/draft pick depth when you can turn all that into helpful players. What makes trading with you difficult is there isn't a lot of bargaining that can be done. You have one pick to offer...I can't ask you do offer me a better pick if that's what I'd prefer.

I'm not here to tell anyone how run their team anymore than I'd want people tell me how to run mine. Never in my wildest dreams would I've imagined having to care about the fantasy value of a guy like Engelland. That's what makes this league so much work but a lot of fun.

Honestly, it's stupid of me. But I like Allen a lot. He gets the categories I want

Looking at Arian's roster, I am not quite sure he can be classed as "Rebuilding". Pretty solid....

I would rather have Allen. Still rather have the best player in any deal. Was forced to be on the other side of that thought this year due to cap and i felt i lost almost all trades i made.

Trust me Paul, I look at your roster almost everyday hoping to find a piece that we could finally make a deal around. I always seem to miss out on your freak out days when you overpay or havent made a trade and just need to get one done. Give me the heads up a day before your start having that twitch next time...I'm sure we'll get something done.
