The Canadian Hockey League today announced that 2013 will be the final opportunity for member clubs to select European goaltenders in the annual CHL Import Draft.
European goaltenders born in 1994 or 1995 may be selected by CHL clubs in the first round of the 2013 CHL Import Draft. For all current CHL Import goaltenders and any that may be selected in the 2013 CHL Import Draft, such goaltenders may continue to play in the CHL until they have exhausted their major junior eligibility.
“The goaltender position is the most important in our game,” said CHL President David Branch. “In partnership with Hockey Canada, the CHL has identified the need to further develop Canadian goaltenders by providing increased opportunities for them to compete in our league and succeed at the next level. The CHL will continue to be the world’s largest development league and the number one supplier of talent to the National Hockey League and Canadian Interuniversity Sport.”
The decision was made by the CHL Board of Directors at their meeting in May.
The 2013 CHL Import Draft takes place on Wednesday July 3 with the Vancouver Giants currently holding the first overall pick. The two-round draft will take place online with the order of selection rotating through each of the CHL’s three leagues using an inverse order of final regular season standings from the 2012-13 season. Each team in the CHL is permitted to carry two European import players each season who are selected annually through the CHL Import Draft.

Re: 2013 Entry Draft Discussion.
Absolutely terrible decision. As of right now, less than 10% of the goalies in the entire CHL are European.

excellent idea

I agree.Fair Deals S wroteCOLONexcellent idea
This was pretty much announced at the beginning of this season, although I think it was only the OHL that planned to do it then. The CHL is designed to develop Canadian Junior players, I think there has been to much recent emphasis on just being the best possible team and forgetting that it was designed to make great professional players. I am not against foreign players all together, I just hate seeing the CHL becoming a business like the NHL. The CHL needs more Ottawa 67's/Kilreas where they develop the player and person instead of focusing on just winning. If this rule helps develop better Canadian Goaltenders than I am all for it.
Just my two cents.

Re: 2013 Entry Draft Discussion.
ya, i actually agree with it. The CHL is a development league for Canadian kids
it's not the World Hockey league, it's the Canadian hockey league....if we eventually want to take back over as the worlds top hockey country we're gonna have to stick to this.
and eventually push all other countires out of the CHL...

Re: 2013 Entry Draft Discussion.
It's a give and take.. We usually only get the top flight euros. It's a double edged sword in that our kids play against the best.. but so do the kids from other countries.

Agree wholeheartedly with Steve and Shook, which is scary as it rarely happens. With a string of losses at the international level hockey Canada is taking steps to improve its performance no issue here.

As you become more of a vet in this league you will soon realize we were right all along.
