On the topic "holding goalies hostage" I think there are two separate situations:

1 - Say Howard goes down and DET signs Auld to split time with Jonas. If I'm asking for a late first I'm holding you hostage. Dick move, but shrewd GMing.

2 - Kyle with Bernier. Sure, he's Quick's backup but he's a promising prospect to boot. He has a vested interest in keeping him other than just screwing me over. Same goes for me holding on to Ben Bishop. I'm not gonna dress him, but he's got good potential and is waiver exempt. No reason for me to help Florida out and move him...

I agree on both counts Mike. Although have been in the situation 1 multiple times (on both sides) and have never held for more payment and appreciate when the GM didn't hold me for overpayment. That's a give and take and is quiet often repaid via future trades and good relationships.

2-> and i fully appreciate the value Bernier as a blue chip prospect goalie holds, it's just tough given the overemphasis that not having a tandem can hold in the event your starter goes down, and your (non-matched) backup isn't getting GP that week. Once again, not something we should change, just an annoying pitfall of our weekly setup and statistical comparisons.

3-> don't you ever mentioned howard going 'down'. Please remember, this is coming from the GM who has had his starting goalie hurt in the final stretch/playoffs ALL 3 YEARS OF THE BBKL.

Ok I just read the whole useless comments on this thread.

Pretty much, people are jealous that NYR got Hall.

hahaha.

The lack of a tandem really fucked me over last season. I stupidly didn't pay enough attention to my GGP and ran out at the end of the season. If I hadn't fucked up with the Goc salary fiasco I probably would have gone on a bit further, and would have had to sit Quick...

Just wait until Greiss becomes the starter. Giroux or bust!

Folks taking both sides of a deal = a good deal.

and Kipper and some other shit too Hong :P

I then turned kipper into Varlamov, Giguere, Reilly smith and Cam Atkinson

Edit: Mike has it right when he says people taking both sides usually means a nice deal for both parties.

Taylor Hall has elite bbkl upside, very fair trade both ways but I'd personally take Kyle's side

Bernier was the icing on the cake for Mike to land his tandem. The core of the deal is Hall/Ott.

Pretty much. Although I'm of the opinion that Bernier is a very, very valuable piece going forward. I just couldn't pass up the chance of getting a player like Hall. Especially since I have a young stud like Varlamov already locked up!

This deal is pretty even I think. I can't decide which side I like better. I think there's risk on both sides with Bernier and Taylor Hall. I'm not as high on Taylor Hall as some of you which is why I don't think it's a slam dunk deal for Kyle. Mike gets Steve Ott as well who is the most reliable and proven piece in the deal as well as probably the best productive piece right now in terms of H2H. This takes away some of the risk for Mike with Bernier.
