How does picking up players work? If I go to the available free agents on Fantrax, can I pick them up and it doesnt affect anything else on my team? Are there any subtleties in this league?

You have to claim them on these forums before picking them up on Fantrax and they have to have an NHL contract.

Depending on age and contract status, they are to be eligible to DRAFT thru our entry or Waiver draft periods, in which both are done for the yr.
There is almost no such thing as an 'unseen' or 'overlooked' player worth picking up in this league... Its what makes this league super elite and hall of fame difficulty

September waiver draft: This is where you can get the Undrafted College/Euros/AHL guys who have signed NHL deals in the past year. Also there are few cases (if any) where this would be worth your while, but I believe you can also pick up unsigned, entry draft ineligible players in the waiver draft as well. But there are usually much more obvious potential NHLer options on the table at this point In my opinion. Also guys with NHL deals who were missed in the BBKL entry draft.
June Entry draft: Where you can pick up any NHL draft eligible player, but can't sign them beforehand if they are draft eligible. (Think Edmonton unable to sign Tkachev because he played in Europe, its like that but no country or league bias).
Free Agency: Leftover waiver draft players, older guys who just signed NHL deals (Like Gagne today)
Edit: When I first joined the league I found this the most difficult aspect to completely wrap my head around. But I'm pretty confident I have it down now! (If I'm wrong about any of this someone please correct me).
