It's very simple. Sergei Gonchar is 38 with one more year left on his deal, and has shown considerable signs of decline in the last 3 seasons. There is very little reason to believe that Gonchar sticks around after this season. Stephane Robidas is three years younger, with an additional year of control, and though his play has declined it is not to the same extent as Gonchar. There is still potential for an additional contract after next year.
