Gaborik is definitely < Vanek. I told mik this multiple times before starting negotiations about 1.5 weeks on and off til today. The adds were the problem, and mik wouldn't budge with the adds I wanted him to pay.
The thing people in bbkl don't realize about my team is lack of NHL depth (in order to get out of bottom 5 standings consistently). Fehr + Scandella aren't some throw-away adds that are worth a draft pick or anything. These guys are full time NHLers in their prime age (Scandella being very underrated IMO) that will provide me pretty good depth over the season. All 3 guys have had some injury history and YES, I even mentioned to Mik via PM Vanek always has generally been healthier over Gaborik. TBH, Gaborik hasn't been injured all that much last 2 seasons and I like his chance to explode in CLB, as much as Vanek will in NYI. The kind of depth Mik gave me allowed me to think that by 2015, I won't be close to a bottom 5 team overall even with a tough division. 2014 1st NSH was a sufficient substitute in return.
Ur grtting better paul but u still have a long ways to go before ur out of the draft lottery, no offense.
I don't want to say that I will get out of the draft lottery position all of a sudden bro, don't worry I'm realistic.
But at this rate I have every confidence that i won't be positionally perceived as a team considered to automatically be a top 5 pick. Vanek and Gaborik's production when all things equal really can't be argued one way or another. One couldnt possibly say Vanek for Gabo straight up was an absolute rape. Thats all.

Gets u out of the basement...maaaaaaaaybe.
How goes gonna take the ne xt step though? I know I'm not trading any legit firepower for a fehr and scandella type package...
U grt that stuff with top end draft picks and prospects and a mix of nhl talent.

Just no reason for u to add that first for what looks like scandella and fehr...if u were patient ud get a better player by waiting for the draft or being patient with the pick.
Anyways. My 75 cents.

Its gotten better. The problem is the teams around him are too but they still have their high value assets ( well...most of them do lol).
Pauls got a lot of older players too that are gong o be hard sells the next couple years.

Oh, and Fehr solved his shoulder issues, he has taken plenty of bodychecks during the 73 games in a row he has played in the last 12 months (i.e. since being healthy)
73 games in a row? My gosh almost one 82 game season. How many years has he been in the nhl now? 7 or so?
This is his 6th season as a NHL regular.
GP numbers are:
61/82
69/82
52/82
35/82 (was never healthy during this season)
41/41 (was a healthy scratch the first games of the season)
11/11 this season
so he had 2 seasons marred by the same shoulder problem that seems to be resolved, other than that he's been fairly healthy.
Scandella...I don't give a shit what he did in the playoffs. This is a regular season league...
and what exactly suggests you that he won't replicate in RS play what he's been able to show during playoffs? his only hitch is inconsistency, when he is on his game (already happened as well for stretches of regular season games obv) he is a good one, so, given his young age, chances are he will be a top 4 D for yrs to come.

Because playoff hockey is completely different than reg season hockey. When he does it in the reg season ill clap..
Fehr and him still aren't worth a potential top 5 pick next season.

Like it for Mik, but I know first hand how difficult it can be to add NHL depth. No way Mik would have traded him Scandella unless Paul paid a 1st. I have had GMs ask me for 1st round picks for terrible players and I've tried trading 2nds for NHL players and it seems to get me nowhere. I would have held onto Vanek in hopes he catches fire with JT and sell high on him, but turning him into Gaborik and 2 NHL players is good for Paul's team and he just needs to hope the 2015 1st is a bust, but that's 3-4 years into the future at least anyways.

So hold ur pick and don't worry about depth during a season where u ain't winning shit anyways...
You can pick up depth in the offseason a bajillion times cheaper than during the season...
Picks like the one paul gave up....they go for a looooooot on draft day...patience is a virtue...

Love it for mik. I personally think Vanek + McElhinney for Gaborik + Scandella + Fehr is a fair deal. I feel like Kim traded his first in 2015 (3-8 at this point) for nsh 1st ( 20+ ) straight up. I understand depth as reason to give up futures but I traded away Chimera for a 2nd and had him on my block for a while for picks, Gill was just picked up for a 4th rounder, chuck picked up cliché for a 4th and 5th. I just feel adding those guys, keeping your first and a high caliber prospect would have been better in the long run.
that said, I've made worse trades so what ever. I just don't want mik to end up with McDavid.

Paul for all the trolling you do with Burns and Vanek, I thought you would at least get the upper hand of any potential deal. You must have had the trading itch? I agree with most, that the picks really had no business in this deal. If Gabby can stay healthy and mess with a returning Horton, could be a good get. I also think that Vanek and JT in that system are gonna put up alot of points. I guess i just feel that a team in your position doesn't need to make this deal. If you wanted to move Vanek, sit and wait for overpayment or deadline. With a change of scenery for him his value could go no where but up up up. That is describing Vanek alone. Dont really know what else to say about the picks. Mik made out like a bandit, imo. He should be sending you a Xmas present for all the gifts you gave him....

i'm showing that aside from those two seasons where he went through that problem he played 182 games out of 216; i'm not sure what's the average for the regular NHLer, but i wouldn't expect it to be significantly different from 85%...
anyway, don't want to jinx it lol

not necessary but i just felt like replying when 2 players i like are called scraps for questionable reasons.

I misread this deal at first and though it was 2014 CAR for 2015 CAR, which seemed random.
I really don't like this deal for Paul, Scandella's a decent piece, but as a regarded lottery team, it makes a lot more sense to maximize the value of those assets, especially in a draft where guys like McDavid an Barzal are available. Things can go wrong, your goalies could shit on you, you could have injuries to your best players, thats all it takes to go from being a bottom 5-8 team to a bottom 1-3.
My pick for instance in a much lower regarded draft class, traded in a rush, landed Michalek + Lazar inevitably. Which I'm not saying Paul's pick is as lowly regarded as mine, but I think he could do a lot better than Scandella and Fehr with some patience, especially in that 2015 draft class.
ps mik, I'm interested in that CAR pick.

gooker wroteCOLONThe adds were the problem, and mik wouldn't budge with the adds I wanted him to pay.
If you didn't get the adds you wanted, why make a deal? I know Mik is a stubborn and cheap fuck but why not just back out if he wasn't going to add what you wanted?

no way i make this deal without the picks, even if that is quite some time away and might not amount to anything.
Also, Paul got lucky we didn't complete the deal before the Vanek/Moulson trade, cause otherwise i was not going to add much at all for swapping Gaborik and Vanek.
I guess i just feel that a team in your position doesn't need to make this deal.
a team that is not dressing a full lineup should not care and miss GP minimum?
Not that i checked CAR's numbers, but i guess that was a factor for Paul in lookin to deal Vanek: replacing Vanek with a similar player while getting a complete lineup moving forward.
