Tips From the Champ - Building a BBKL Winner: Tip #2

Again, these may be a little controversial and some might not agree but I don't care. My 2 BBKL championships will block my vision (yes, stolen from Patrick Roy.. kinda ). I'm going to give tips on how to build a winner in this league to hopefully help some of you guys. These tips I will fully endorse and actual strategies I use myself. Use them if you'd like to and feel free to ask me on msn to clarify anything you do not understand.

Tip # 2: Remember, all categories count

When building your team don't forget about some categories, they all count the same. If you are weak in a certain category, trade based on getting stronger where you are weak. If you are already very strong somewhere why worry about getting better there? This tip is pretty self explanatory but I find a lot of you guys don't pay attention to this. It is so simple.

Just look at Shiv's team last season. Tons of offense, stpts, but really weak hits, PIMS, etc.. he would've need a horseshoe up his ass to win last season. Also, pay attention to which categories are toughest to pad.. and hoard those players that score highly in that category. In my opinion those are hits, BS, PIMS, FOWs & shtoi. Some agree, some disagree. Those categories are the toughest to stack. Oh, and SOG is a very underrated category too. Guys like David Booth, Radim Vrbata, & Michael Frolik were in the top 30 in the NHL in SOG. Keep your eyes open on any player that can help you where you need help the most.

I clearly didn't win, but I made it to the WCF (I know, easy conference, etc.) but my team was primarily made up of the periph stats and goaltending.

I think if you are 100% offence, and I mean 100% with goaltending, you could be successful but never win.

The problem with being completely one-sided in stats is it relies on you winning all stats.

Exactly Shep, if you are a balanced team and strong everywhere you are less likely to suffer a big loss during a slow week. You will, more times then not actually pull out the victory. If you are heavy in a few stats, much tougher to win.

Oh man... I'm with Shiv here. Smart category targeting is the best way to beat the other top teams. By that I mean, if your not Scott or Bryan (both of whom have balanced builds and score near the top in most categories), the best way to beat them moving forward, is to specifically build to be borderline unbeatable at certain categories, competitive where the asset management allows it, and ignore the ones that hinder your other categories (PIMS for me)

The real trick is not to deal away start players for prospects or lesser players. That is how teams like Scott's are built.

ovey is not worth 9+m. crosby was unreal. sedins were awesome. but the rest of your team sucked including goaltending.
